someone posted on here a month ago or so that he did an oil change at 2000miles and found little metal fragments in his oil which is not unusual for new vehicles.

many I know always do at least one oilchange BEFORE the dealer even says to.
    so ya I'd do it.

Once the engine is broken in etc then ya maybe go longer.
but for first change I would've already have done it.
Hell when my car was new I did an oil change every 2500km for the first 10 000km. after that every 8000km which is whats called for.

Honestly changing your oil is probably one of the best things you can do for your engine. and with the cost covered for these why the fuck are people so god damn picky and stubborn about it.
    JUST CHANGE THE FUCKIN OIL.
you aren't even paying for it.
and even if you are, for the price of an oil change just do it.

I think I am old school, but I change my oil/filter every 3 months/~2500 miles. Doesnt matter if I do synthetic or conventional.

I use 5w30, and change the filter every time. This way, I know that its been done. Since I bought my truck used, I keep using what the previous owner used. Sometimes I have the dealer change it, and sometimes I do it myself. Also I get under there and check/clean things and look around for possible issues. I also heard that you shouldnt switch between synthetic and conventional..

rip in the driver's seat, front bumper with driving lights. Waiting till it's not my daily bitch.
Drive it hard to break in the rings & get everything seated. Take it to the dealer at 4k and claim it was run under extreme conditions and you're going on vacation so change is needed now. First change will have a higher acid content due to break in. Afterwards, follow OEM recommendation for your driving habit. Running the engine hard is recommended by everyone except lawyers that write break in instructions. You can shake it & it won't break.

to be fair...every mechanic I have talked to which are all friends, have all said that even if oil is better now and can go for say 10k miles...the filters are still very similar to the older ones so actually not that great for that long.
hell like I said before for the price of an oil change I really do not see the fuss. I do mine way more frequent than they need to be done.
I even asked my mechanic about it once if I can go longer, he said I can...but at the end of the day doing it every 8000km is better than doing it every 10 000.

with that logic my oil needs to be changed every 400km
mmmm good old diesel. shits black after 10km of it being changed :D

There really is, this is why I hate when people bring up oil. Everyone suddenly becomes a toyota engineer and share "facts"

Free oil change? My dealer told me 2 hr wait time to change the oil in the Prius today. My time is not free. Plus I lost a Triton V-10 at a Ford Dealer because the mechanic put a Latex glove in my engine. 2 Weeks Later- KABOOM!!!!!! With out my Van for 2-months. I will never ever have any dealer change my oil except for Porsche- They allow me to watch, plus i get the same mechanic.

Mark the oil filter before taking it in, and check the dip stick upon leaving.

So wasteful. Both money and resources.

Pennzoil conventional 5w-30 can easily go 4-5k miles.

Stonewall is the fattest 5 lug slug ever
I use Castrol Synthetic, and other than my first oil change after the rebuild, which was at 3k, I change mine every 5k.

Just my opinion: I've owned 3 vehicles well over 200,000 miles that I bought new in the Northeast where wear and tear is extreme on engines.
1996 Dodge Caravan: Complete piece of crap-225,000 miles
1996 Toyota Tacoma: Best truck I ever owned-245,000 miles
2008 Honda Minivan: Wife likes (that's all that matters) 205,000 miles
I've never had an internal engine issue, never burned a drop of oil !!!!!!!!!!
I've run various brands of Synthetic oil, 10w-30 with Napa Gold Filters, changed oil every 3,500 miles. Prefer Castrol Full Synthetic but also use Quaker State Full Synthetic cause it's $22/for 5 quarts at Walmart
I ignore the manufacturers recommendations because they suggest oil grade and change frequency for difference reasons than what oil is used for.
    1) The grade of the oil directly influences miles per gallon...the thinner the oil, less drag, less drag, equals better mileage. With cafe' standards what they, the manufacturer will do anything for an extra 1/2 mile per gallon.
    2) Changing the oil every 10,000 miles versus 5,000 miles reduces the cost of ownership which is where many manufacturers claim their product is cheaper to own.
Oil is a lubricant. The cleaner it is the better it works. 0w-whatever is too thin for almost all climates except maybe Alaska in January !!!
I'll continue doing what I've always done...change it often, Synthetic 10w-30 with a good filter. Oil changes are pretty cheap compared to engine rebuilds caused by excess wear !!

    My brain just supernova'd.

Of course, it's the second number that tells more of the story as opposed to the 0w. And by using 10w, you're compromising cold start pumping ability, which would probably cause more wear than if you were to extend your oil change interval to a normal amount for synthetic, or at least the mark set by Toyota.

Again, changing synthetic oil at 3500 miles is a total waste.
