I am looking to regear, probably with 5.29's on 33's, I have a 18 tacoma sport 4x4 and I am trying to figure out which would be best, I'd love some input, so far im leaning towards the 5.29's, drop bracket lift on its way and some mud tires also, probably going to put a detroit truetrac in the rear, anyone done gears on 33's? I've been on stock gearing for a while and I am just tired of stomping the gas just to roll.. I am also curious on the tools necessary to check the front differential backlash and if the rear differential is a spanner style carrier bearing adjustment or shim, any input will be helpful thanks!

Check out the mega threads. You can do a search for the 4.88 and the 5.29 mega threads. They have all the info you need.

I’m on 265/70 R17 KO2. 3 inch lift and about 650-700 pounds constantly in the bed area. RTT and shell and other stuff. 5.29’s installed with a Nitro Worm gear in the rear - similar to a D-tru trac and ARB locker up front. I couldn’t be happier. Truck is very responsive and shifts like it should. I’ll probably get closer to 33’s once these tires wear out.

I'm thinking about getting 5.29s with my 33s as well. Random (non Tacoma) people I speak to say I won't be able to get up to highway speeds.

It's a daily driver, is 70-75 mile per hour still going to be a possibility? If anybody has the same setup, what are your RPMs like?

    I'm at 2200-2300 rpm at 70 mph 5.29s and 255/85r16

Random non Tacoma people don’t understand the gear ratios the Tacoma transmissions have. A bone stock manual will rev higher at highway speeds than an automatic on 33’s with 5.29.
