5 months wait and my TRD offroad is ready to be picked up this weekend. But they damaged it!

So I had a call today saying that when unloading my truck, they damaged the plastic on the front bumper. I can still drive it away on the day agreed. I don’t know how bad the damage is. They said they will repair it on an agreed date. Anybody have experience with this sort of thing? I’m going to try and get a freebie or two. No harm in asking. but I read it’s common and some people I’ve spoken to have said to let it slip and it’s not a big deal if they make it like new again.

judging by the fact that I can still collect it then the damage is more likely to be a scratch or scuff. What a bummer. Any experiences like this?

Don't drive away until its fixed. This is my advice. Do not let them promise to fix it later.

As long as its fixed and they maybe throw in a freebie I would not worry.

Vehicles probably get damaged during transport more than you think, sounds superficial so let them fix it and not worry about it.

Don’t drive away even if it’s a Toyota dealer with a good reputation?

Would that work in this market? Probably some guy in the parking lot willing to give them 3k more than OP.

They have no reason to wait to fix it. They know it's damaged. They can literally sell it to anyone if you don't want it. You do want it, they will fix it anyways if you do or do not buy. Have them fix it first before you sign paperwork. They should have just done it then told you in this situation.

Reputation not looking so good from my end... They wouldn't put a damaged vehicle on a full lot before the market was this crazy, they'd get it taken care of before they sold it.

Plus, you've waited 5 months. What's an extra week?

I’ll add some spacers and bigger tires, 50000kms, demand 60k and call it a day. That seems to be the done thing in my area ;)

I’ve seen brand new trucks come off the trains pelted with bullets. What do they do…fix it and make like nothing ever happened. Yours is probably a simple remove/replace. Let them fix it and then enjoy your truck :)

Yeah that makes true. Regardless I don’t think I’m willing to take a hard stance on this given the market and I’m getting it for retail price. But I think I’ll try a gentle persuasion. Maybe I’ll wear the Jedi robe. you WILL give me all of the optional extras and some pro wheels.

Unfortunately this happens more often than you think. In a normal market where dealers actually have inventory on the lot, they would repair the damage, put the car on the lot, and the buyer would never be the wiser. Different story if it's structural damage, but the vast majority of these cases are minor damage that can easily be fixed and look like new again.

This….. they don’t have to report it either up to a certain dollar amount. A discount and repair is definitely in order. You can drive it way from the lot with no worries. Just get the fix in writing I’m sure they will make it right.

Yes, I've seen it a hundred times, even on my own purchase (with a subaru)

Salesmen don't care once the papers are signed, they are the same as realtors and lawyers.

I'm not saying they won't take care of it, but I know of many scenarios where the repairs are sub-par, or delayed, not completed etc.

If I were you I would definitely want to see the damage before they fix it. If it really is minor, have em fix it before signing the papers, and they should definitely give you a smaller discount or freebie for the trouble.

If not, let someone else buy it. Why pay top dollar for a truck visibly damaged right off the transporter?

True statement - Lucky they even told you about it... I'm sure half the time it happens, the customer has no clue.

Every time I’ve ever bought a car/truck brand new they have a “we owe” this is the legal obligation to make right what is wrong. Have them take photos and write up a very detailed “we owe” with pictures before you take it home then have it in the body shop when they schedule you with a free loaner.

In this market I'd be inclined to take it......provided I see the damage first. If it looks a simple as it sounds I'd take delivery and get them to fix it later.

I understand how cynical folks are towards dealerships, but if they treated me fairly during the purchase I'd work with them on the repair.

Pics of the damage would help make a judgement call. Could be that worthless piece of plastic you would throw away anyway .
