5 things I do not like about my 2020 Tacoma

Hi everyone, first time posting...since I bought the Tacoma I have to admit I have not been fully happy with the vehicle...partly my fault I admit... I think I rushed the test drive and was just excited to buy what is really a nice looking truck...anyways here it goes, let me know what you think:

    1) The engine becomes very loud once you start driving on a light incline while on highway speeds, either it needs to increase RPM's or downshift...I am talking about a light incline!
    2) Most times when the engine shifted down going lightly uphill as described above, even though the road is now straight and level, it will stay on the higher gear/increased rpm's as if stuck for many seconds after reaching level.. sometimes I need to decelerate to get out of that
    3) The Cruise control will go crazy by accelerating to ridiculous levels once the slower car in front of you is no longer there
    4) the hood was vibrating during highway speeds due to inappropriate hood support. I applied the fix on this site but for one year I had to drive with the reflections on the hood dancing due to the vibrations
    5) Lack of keyless start and lack Lack of automatic headlight on/off. The latter is more bothersome, couldn't believe it was not standard

    That's it folk...

    Welcome to TW!

    which vehicle you had before?

    1. IMO this engine is pretty quiet unless its doing like 5-6k rpms.

    2. Thats why i prefer MT. Having said that, i drove 2 different 19 ATs and they drove fine to me. My buddy loves his 19 AT and he had all gen tacomas.

    3. Again, no issues here. I love the adaptive cruise on my truck, i always set it to the closest setting.

    4. Yeah, my hood does it too, but the scoop helps apperantly? Its just the thin metal, just how it is.

    5. Keyeless start you mean push button? I prefer the old school key actually. Your truck doesnt have auto headlights? Is yours the SR version?

What trim level and engine did you purchase? My TRD Offroad has both of the features listed in #5.

I’m 5 hours into a cross country trip in the truck I purchased on Saturday night. Just driving into El Paso from Tucson as I type this (wife is driving now). I found the truck does run in 5th gear up the slightest of incline at 80 mph, it dropped into 4th on steeper grades and even third once. Fuel economy was just under 17 on the first leg, but the truck only had 859 miles on it when I filled up in Las Cruces. I haven’t seen any cruise control issues or hood issues sofar. The only problem I’ve found is the left side steering wheel control button appears to be wired backwards, when I press up the radio switches to the previous lower preset rather than the next one up.

Sorry truck is SR5 extended cab V6 2020....so auto headlight should be on it? I just leave them on all the time.
My prior vehicle was a cheapo GMC Canyon 2005, I thought a 2020 37K Tacoma should be a bit better.

1-3 sounds like could be addressed with OVTune.

#5 are the two things I wish I had on my 2015. Love everything else about the truck.
Sorry to hear you echoing the same disappointments as a lot of 3rd gen owners ... didn't Toyota fix the auto trans hyperactive shifting by 2020?

My 19 OR has push to start but not auto on headlights (but has auto brights ). My fucking 2000 Explorer had auto headlights. I didn't even check when I test drove the car. I assumed it had auto lights. I was more focused on the trans for my test drive. :stirthepot: Didn't find out about the headlights until the ride home that night.

I believe there are safety features that shut off the lights after a certain amount of time, but there probably isn't a true "auto" setting until you get to the TRD trims.

My prior vehicle was also a GMC Canyon, 2008 with the off road package. This Tacoma was hands down an upgrade, especially with the GM quality issues that led me to trade it in in the first place.

These trucks are geared for MPG and are part time direct injected. Thus, you'll experience higher RPMs than you'd be used to in the GMC. But my Canyon was running 2300 RPM on flat ground at 70 while the Taco runs 17-1800 in the same spots. Also keep in mind that the transmission is constantly learning so it could change a little over time. You get used to it either way.

You can also turn off adaptive cruise I believe by holding the button for 3 seconds. My truck doesn't have adaptive cruise so I can't confirm this first hand.

As for the hood flutter, I'm sorry you had a defective hood support. However some hood flutter is normal at higher speeds no matter the vehicle. If you think the Tacoma is bad, try driving any Ford at highway speeds.

You don't have a DRL/Auto setting? My OR has this.

Transmission and gearing are shit no sane person will argue with that as for the other problems mentioned I could care less it’s a truck so of course it’s not going to drive like a Cadillac as long as it can get me off road and past 300k miles I’m happy with it and every other issue can be fixed with after market mods

Nope. I have a base OR. You need either tech or premium package. I forget which one adds it.

    Haha!

I honestly have never used my auto headlights feature. My 2013 express with manual windows has it and its pretty annoying to me. Lights stay on if the van is off with the key in, i once forgot about it while having lunch and my battery died.
