So I had a meeting a little while ago with my Sheriff. I told him all the special projects I was ram-rodding were complete. I brought him up to speed on our long term investigations and cold cases. Then I gave him my letter of intent to retire, it's time to hang up my gunbelt. I'll be going out with 33 years on the job. My last work day will be July 31st, terminal leave to begin August 1. Retirement here I come.

I never went into DROP due to promotions, and pay raises. When I started running the numbers I came out better staying in the pension plan. I walk with 99% of my highest 5 years pay.

Around here, all those things means we don't have to eat beans&weannies next week!!! They keep us fed and a cover over us but nothing in todays schema would keep me from DROP, I have to go in this year, Counter starts then 5 more years... My old Clerk for 20 years asked me if I was going to work till I was 80, I told him the "light at the end of the tunnel" was still an 8 locomotive train coming at me so I'd probably work till my head hits the keyboard for the last time...

FRS sent me an email last week, fun folks up there at state, it said, "you've reached your final milestone"!! Bastards, I ran around the rest of the day thinking I could just go ahead and die now, they've used me up till I'm not worth more than my final milestone!!

RJ, I understand where your at and your decision for DROP, on the non-high risk FRS pension doing the DROP has a major impact. For the high risk FRS it’s a little different for a few reasons and I was a unique case on top of that.

For high risk (LE, Fire, DoC) we can go in DROP at 25 years. That would have given me 75% of my pay, and then the 5 years of DROP. The Sheriff's Office got lucky with several nice 10% pay increases and salary decompression adjustments after my 25 year mark. If I had gone into DROP none of that would have counted for my retirement.

As it started to happen I decided to push going into DROP for a year to get some retirement benefit from it. When I was ready to go in we got another pay increase, so I pushed it off for another year, then a promotion hit, another year push. As I started to rerun my FRS numbers I realized I was doing better to stay in until I had 33 years and take the 99% of my high 5.
