Rangers in the Long Cane area here gave a co-worker free reign rein to trap and kill hogs. He was supposed to get me one to smoke, but the slacker never did. :(

When I was stationed on Okinawa the SR-71 was still operational at Kadena AFB. They would fly in or out a couple of times a week.

Landings were kind of neat because the plane would start to circle the island as it bled off speed so you would hear the sonic boom as it actually slowed down. This was always high in the sky and had a unique sound, you never knew when the plane was landing until it happened.

Takeoffs we’re the best though. A KC-135 tanker would take off about 15 minutes ahead of the Blackbird to get up to altitude for refueling. Then you would hear the SR-71 start to spool up the engines, they did this several times so it was always a signal they were taking off. When they would take off they were moving as they cleared the runway. They would go several miles offshore at a moderate climb, then it was show time. They would pull the nose up and hit the throttle, the sonic boom came quick. The engine noise was incredible and lasted for several minutes even after you lost sight of the plane. At night you could see the afterburner rings glowing in 2 sets of 7 rings. The plane would get up to altitude, refuel, then take off for its mission. There was always another far off sounding sonic boom after the refueling as they punched the throttle once again.

We were always told they went supersonic right after takeoff in case the soviets tried to shoot it down with a SAM. Don’t know if that’s true, but it made for exciting takeoffs.

don’t know if it’s changed but there was no closed season on wild hogs in Florida back in the day and we (us rednecks) used to go out with dogs and hunt all night long. I got close to 250# as my largest but they went over 300 I have a 4” tusk of one boar.

I had a similar thought except that living on park property… no go. And these were just too cute!

Smart, no when to hold em, no when to fold them. I would not like to drive your rig in high winds.

That is magnificent! Thank you for sharing that experience. One of my biggest regrets of never joining the armed forces is not getting to see or be a part of some of these incredible machines.

I've seen them in the distance when riding some of the FSRs around here, but not up close. I didn't see any when I lived in FL (New Smyrna Beach), but probably because they weren't hitting up the touristy spots. ;)

They had SR-71's at RAF Mildenhall when I was a kid. I can recall watching them refuel after takeoff while riding the bus to school. The SR was always a hot topic among the airplane geeks like myself.

Still open season on wild hogs here in FL. We can’t kill them fast enough to slow down the spread.

I wonder how many jumped up when they said we need a volunteer to test this thing out!
