    Not sure about tenkara but on a normal fly rod you have to divide your hook size by 3or4 and what you come up with is the leader size you need. Otherwise it won’t lay over correctly and will tie knots.

    I think it's just the short length of line overall that doesn't work well with them regardless of leader size/length. Something about the weight on the bead that does it.
    I seem to have the best luck with humpies, elk caddis, and something called a purple haze.
