Damage to the house if it falls towards it? I have worked tree removal in the past, and have worked several jobs where a tree fell into a house. I hope you have an uneventful night.

 

Guaranteed. I mean, the tree is maybe 60' tall. The trunk is about a yard in diameter at waist height. The kicker is, it sits about 20' behind the family room. Great for shade in the summer, but man does it constantly drop twigs, sticks and branches on the roof. We had tree people out here a couple times during COVID. Both times I asked about having it removed, due to perceived/imagined risk of falling on the house. Both tree guys told me, "No way in hell it falls on the house. It's healthy, solid, still growing, doesn't have EAB problems. We won't take it down unless there's an issue." Hope they're right.

 

I've got 7 water & willow oak trees around my house (at least 50 - 60' tall)... any one of them would destroy my house (or a neighbors) if they fell the "right" way. But I love the shade in the summer and it's worth the risk to keep them, IMHO

 

I understand about the shade value and I’m sure it is a beautiful tree to have on your property. I sincerely hope your tree guys are correct. I might have a certified arborist inspect the tree every year or two, for continued peace of mind.

Yep, risk vs. reward. Plus, why else are you paying for insurance.

Seriously, if the trees are healthy, don’t cut them down. Enjoy them as long as you can. I never liked removing perfectly healthy trees.

Trees are healthy, but I do need to get 2 of them removed. Three of them are within 30' of each other, so the middle one has to go and another one is too close to the house.

 

I would almost never do that naked.

I have a similar-ish scenario, except that the tree isn't mine. There's a massive Maple tree at the end of my yard on the property line to the neighbor behind me. It's a full time job constantly picking up branches and junk from this tree. If it ever gets blown over, it's taking out the back side of my house. I don't have any legal right to have it cut back, but last summer I did manage to cut off a few bigger branches that were hanging over past the shed, giving the damn tree rats direct access to the shed, which they chewed a few holes through the roof to set up camp all winter long.

I used a chain saw chain tied off to cable pulls on each end, I just tossed one cable over the branch then sawed back and forth until the branch fell down. It didn't take much effort to cut through it and it had to be 6"-8" in diameter.

 

Law here says we can trim any branches that cross over the property line. (one new neighbor trimmed all branches hanging over in to their yard (and cut down all trees in the yard)

I'm lucky my one neighbor likes the tree that splits the line between us.... I'd cry if it gets chopped down - shades my driveway in the summer, so truck gets some shade.
