My folks have a Mitsubishi heat pump in the new master bedroom addition on their house in FL. It works well for them, but their coldest temps in the winter are about equal to your average temps, and they only have to deal with that for a few days each year.

My worst experience with heat pumps was in the winter in Afghanistan. When the temps dropped to freezing and below, the heat pumps could not keep up with the cold. We'd crank the temp gage as hot as it would go, and it still would only stay about 35° above the outside air temp. The colder the desert got, the colder we were.

If you have to have a secondary heating system to kick in when the heat pump can't keep up, then you are probably negating most of the savings of running a heat pump with the expense of buying a second system. Also, if it takes 8-12 years to get your money back, the unit is almost due for replacement when you finally start to benefit from your savings. The typical heat pump will last 15 years or so.

For overall comfort, lack of drafts and silence you will never match a hydronic baseboard system with any moving air system. Baseboard is truly the gold standard in wintertime comfort.

Where I live almost everyone has a forced air furnace in their basement. Heat pumpers utilize buried coils or submerged. And a lot of folks supplement with wood, pellets, or coal.

It works. I am comfortable. My wife misses the really hot heat we had with an oil furnace. I don't miss $5/gallon oil. :D

goodness, that's about how well the tiny company functions where I'm working. 2 "gatekeepers" on every aspect of manufacturing operations gets bogged down daily because of them.

As for heating systems, I'd love to have a gas fired boiler for hot water radiators. It just isn't happening where I'm at unless a 3000 gallon white propane tank magically shows up in the back yard with a pre-paid debit card to fill the tank.

my old set up was the same. went thru 2 1/2 tanks of propane a winter.pretty pricey. we put in a new system 2 yrs ago. so much more efficient. last year didnt even use a whole tank of propane.the new set up will pay for itself at that rate is another year or two.

Heatpump here.... when the temp is below 35 or 40* it seems to run most of the time and like others have mentioned, it still feels cool in here.
