Hey gang. Only 45 here but could use some advise about being a dad. My father past away years ago sooo..........

I have two great boys. Both do excellent in terms of growing up. They are on track, well adjusted and seem to be doing well.

Boy 2 absolutely refuses to read. And his latest scores show he is at the very bottom of the green or "normal" reading level at age 9... but you can clearly see his reading skills trending down. So we started reading together. First week we both enjoyed it. Second week he was ready to kill me. I was ready to pluck my eyes out. So now we do timed reading 45 minutes after school. He can read with me or without but he had to do it...

Our relationship is fucked now. He doesn't want to go over to the pond to fish after. He doesn't really want to do anything with me.

Is his reading level this fucking important? Do I need to relax?

If anyone raised a kid who refused to read, can you share how it turned out?

Any teachers have any ideas suggestions?

    Thanks guys...

    Good morning

As an elementary school principal and parent of a struggling reader now in his 20’s, I would tell you that reading is a critical skill. 9 years old is at that transition between learning to read and reading to learn. He may be struggling because he lack’s foundational skills (phonics). If that is the case you might want to help him put those sound’s together. Regardless at this age it’s hard and the kids will push back because of it. We found some books that our son really liked. Geronimo Stilton was a great resource because it is filled with text features that were engaging. Try to make it fun. Get two of the same book and read to him while he tracks along with his finger. Stop at certain words and have him read the word. Eventually you can get to a place where he is reading sentences or whole paragraphs. Then have him pause for you and then you fill in the words. Rewards should be frequent enough to build his stamina. Well done’s or nice job or you read that really well. Try hard not to make reading a punishment. He will thank you once he gets into high school or looks at college or trade school. Just my thoughts. As an educator I want to thank you for investing in your children’s learning.

Being childless, I'm probably not the best person to answer this. But I was a kid that hated to read. So I'm curious about what you are reading with him. Are they assigned school books, books he picked out, or are they subjects that interest him?

EDIT: As a kid, I wouldn't read anything but comic books until I was in my mid to late teens. The older I get, the more I read, but the subject matters. I struggle to read things that I don't find interesting, even if I know it will be good for me to know what I'm reading.

Family is the most important thing in life, in my opinion. I’m 65.5 years old, it has been the one of my biggest challenges in life. However it has been the most rewarding and my greatest accomplishment.

I was always a good reader - and still am, my Kindle tracked 55 books read last year.
I assume dyslexia has been ruled out?
What subject matter? School reading or "fun" reading? Let him pick something on a topic he likes. Do you have a Kindle or other tablet for him? I know there are several options for interactive books on kindled that might be a way to bridge the gap from boring paper books to more fun books with audio, games, etc.

My kid hated reading. And yet he reads Manga books, 20 times. Lots of pictures but still reading. He has adhd and can't sit for too long. I am an avid reader, always have been. I never pushed him but let him find what he wanted. Just keep exposing him to different types af literature.
At one point, he read all 3 hunger game books in a week. Nothing since then.

Don't worry about the pond, that stuff goes in cycles. Your job is dad, not pal

Hump day already? I missed Monday and Taco because we hosted a Super Spreader on Sunday. Wife woke me at 0400 on Monday to show her how to take a test, and it came out positive before the liquid could even reach the control line. She ran fever up to 101.9, and is now coughing.

I'm back at work, because #negative. My son who lives with us tested positive this morning. He's bummed, he made all the right decisions as a teacher and stayed healthy, wore the masks, got the shots. And then it's with the family he loves that he gets La 'Rona.

I credit my negativity to a bottle of Sangre de Vida on Saturday, and a bottle of Jameson on Sunday. Oh, and regular does of QBC.

Reading is important. Try not to make it a chore. Start with reading anything he likes. Could even be an instruction manual if you’re doing something. Even the paper, anything at all. He might hate you now but he’ll turn around when he hits his 20s. You’re almost at the “hate my parents” age anyway. Good luck and feel free to stop by. Let us know how he is doing. Heck, let him read (previously screened) posts!

I have a HD electric which is right at that psi and gpm. Works good and as long as it’s stored in the basement during the winter, it keeps on going.

    Howdy everyone!

I spent about 6 hours of my life today replacing 2 broken exhaust pipe flange studs on the passenger side exhaust manifold. I had forgotten how much I hate laying on my back whilst I drill overhead then try to tap a straight hole, twice. One hole ended up needing a Heli coil to fix the (missing) threads.

The other side thankfully only needed the threads chased on 2 holes. Now once I get the frozen O2 sensor out of the Y pipe and cap it, I can hang this Y pipe/cat and then start wrestling with the back half of the exhaust.

My brother was in town since last Friday, he managed to squeeze in an hour for a visit, but we had to drive an hour to where he was staying. I introduced my GF and both he and his wife had so little conversation with her ( or me ) it was irritating. Does anyone else have siblings that you wonder if you should just cease all communications with?
