You could get your own but then you wouldn’t have the awesome plastic net bag it comes in from the store.

We need to get you on a volunteer agreement with your local resource agency so you can show these folks the error of their ways.

a lot of places this is to stop people from bringing wood from a different area that has non native bugs in it. Huge deal here in the central states at campground. no strange or visitor wood allowed. (same thing i tell my wife.)

Same here as well as, in parts of the desert you can't posses any native species. Once it dies it becomes habitat since there's so little of it. Other places you can take "dead and down". I (literally) rip out truck loads of non-native/invasive species to control it and some of it ends up in fire rings and we don't really care since I pile it to burn anyway. We have crews throughout the year trim back trees and brush in the campgrounds and roads and I go through with the excavator and dump truck to pick it up but they're usually only here for a couple weeks at a time. They get quite a bit but can only trim and we put them in areas that need the most trimming to get the most out of them. I grab the live stuff with the ex and rip it out at the roots so the regrowth isn't too bad. But you can bring in wood from the local area sold at local stores.

Same here - “buy it where you burn it” is the local campaign.
But why buy wood where there’s plenty of dead and downed trees all over the damn place? I gather and burn on site. Took me all of 30 minutes yesterday to gather up enough downed branches for two days worth of fires and I doubt I’m even going to get through it all.

plus the store bought stuff had to come from somewhere so isn’t that just perpetuating the problem of transporting trees from one area to another?

I bought wood once. When I was in Utah and there were no trees around. Local Boy Scout troop had bundles for sale and I got one because I hadn’t had a campfire my whole trip and I was missing it.

Most of what I see sold at stores is from the general area. We do have people getting scraps from the local pallet mills but there can't be any nails in it. Most people are compliant because there is so many nails from years past they don't want to add to it and many will go out with a magnet and police up old fire rings so they don't spread and get flat tires.

I’ve bought some in the smokies before that was supposed to have been run through a kiln.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
The store bought is kiln dried, which kills the bugs dead, plus, it then burns like paper and you have to buy (much) more!

@jwctaco - Did you happen to see the Gibson custom 1963 SG reissue for sale in the other section? Is that some of your handiwork?

When we were in Utah back in March we bought all of our firewood in Moab.
We had wood left over when we headed home. We left it at the campsite for the next person.
