Why not buy it? You'd be the landlord for three other units; whose rent payments would make your house payment for you!

Sounds like MT has been thoroughly Californicated in terms of real estate prices

We ran into similar situation when we moved to KY last year. Of course here, "homes" fall into the following categories
A: likely would be condemned in any other state - probably 20% of the "homes" we see
B: nice/livable trailers - probably another 20%
C: traditional built single family homes, 1200 - 2500 ft^2 - maybe 40%
D: Really nice, large houses that look a bit out of place in many areas, and would fit right in with nicer areas in say California. Say 3000 ft^2+, 5+ acres - 5 - 10%

A, B & C are usually pretty affordably priced.
D - these are still no where near CA prices, but they are way beyond what most locals can likely afford.

We paid almost as much for our new place here as we sold our CA house for, but if you took our new KY place (house and property) and transported to CA, it would probably list for $2M+ easily. I am thankful I have a pretty nice paying job, and it's permanent work form home.

And no, even though we sold a house in CA, we had only been in it for 3 years, so almost no equity built up when we sold it. We had to finance 100% of our new place in KY. Thank God for VA mortgages!

 

I'm surprised he's only a first line manager / supervisor. With that level of *specialness*, he will no doubt make it at least to Vice President, maybe even CEO one day! The Dilbert Principle lives!!
