why are people all up in arms about the bridge's history and safety inspections? they do realize that the reason the bridge collapsed was the ship hitting it right? and unless they include ramming bridges from various angles with 1000's of tons of pounds of force as part of the inspections there's likely nothing going to come from dragging all of that into the mix now :notsure:

    Good evening everyone.

Hump day came and went. I'm updating my resume and start looking looking for a permanent job. The place where I'm contracting is just bananas.. I think that the upper management reads Weesa's posts about her employer, then tries to out-do them!

In the past, the Bridge Authority ( Their real dept name!) would close down the south span of the bay bridge and have a ' walk across the bay' day.. I never realized how much that contraption moves around until I was at the top of it and the wind picked up.

Just about NOTHING would win against the impact of that ship going 9 knots. I saw a pic of the port anchor that was dragged a decent distance, the pilots and captain trying to turn the bow away from the bridge abutment.

It's amazing that there's still no mention of the vehicles that went into the water ( besides the contractors). You can see a car and a semi fall in.

you have a moron report to share?
and exactly! no bridge on the face of the planet is engineered for that kind of force.
i saw a couple of video clips that showed semi trucks going across at the last second. looked like they all made it. but that was only the side closer to the strike and not the other end.

Morons would be more like it.. The whole ordeal is just silly, the dead line for the drawings that need to be released so that materials can be ordered to start construction of the 1st trailer is in 2 days. There's upwards of 400 parts that still don't have initial drawings made. There's literally a few thousand drawings floating around that have been through the initial review/markups. There's 3 official checkers, each one seems to have their own idea of CAD standards and the lead designers all have their own ideas of which standards they feel is necessary to pay attention to on any given day. I've been given a stack of red lines/ markups to fix, as I open the models and DWG in the software, it quickly becomes apparent that none of the models were ever done correctly, so there is no associativity to the drawings. I don't know how much you've worked with 3D design software. The models drive the drawings. If a dimension needs changing, the model gets changed then the DWG should automatically update. Except here...

There's text in title blocks that have been basically overwritten, but upon a refreshing, the text gets jumbled. BOM bubbles that have been hand placed instead of being driven from the BOM.. BOM tables that aren't tables, just generic grids that were hand dropped in. Shit like that..

The software doesn't help, either. No one has ever used it before, so there's very little in the line of training except what you can figure out on your own. We have a CAD manager that will nit pick the smallest of insignificant details, yet he will not make a person that has incorrectly made /modified a model or a bad detail on a drawing FIX their mistake, he lets them constantly start on more drawings and other people get to fix the messes.

I just keep telling myself " I get paid by the hour..." and the memories of not having a job are fresh in my brain. May 14th will be 1 year that I've been there, I won't be there for another one.

    Retirement.

Now I have time to do things right.

Cleaned the bed of my truck and corrected the mess of wiring. Now I have bed lights that work and I fixed the USB and 12v plugs in the bed. Had to take out all the gear and cubbies boxes and gas can holders, crawled under the truck, ran loom. Worked 6 hours and realized I was exhausted. Forgot I was retired. I will finish tomorrow.

sounds like your CAD manager just likes the title and nothing more. Or they don't know enough to appreciate why things need to be done a certain way. Whoever has that position needs to not be afraid to lay down the law.
I do 90% of the CAD work at my place and am the only one with any real training or experience so by default I am the CAD manager. My last job didn't have a manager and while we all loosely followed certain rules it was still a free for all. Hated having to take over someone's project because they were on vacation or whatever. My boss has zero training and always tries to jump in and help and I have to explain to him time and time again that he has to do it this way or that way or its just more work for me in the long run...but he ignores me and runs rampant.
