I actually bought a radio before I ever started testing. I got an older Yaesu FTM-350 dual band from another member in the ham thread. I'm in the process of installing it in my truck. I’m still looking at HF rigs but I’m leaning toward an Yaesu FT 891 as I have an interest in portable operating and it can serve as a base or field radio.

I did start with a Baofeng GMRS handheld. It didn’t operate on 2 of the channels so I contacted the Amazon seller. They shipped me a new one from the Tiwain factory to make sure it worked on all channels. It did, and all the 2M/70CM frequencies too. It was totally unlocked lol. It is one of their UV9 radios so several steps up from the infamous UV5 radio. I plan on getting a “real” handheld soon.

It's crazy here in our area of OR. You will drive past a fresh roadkill and an hour later...no sign of it at all. They do good work.
