That’s looking great Walter! I get the sense of satisfaction that comes from being able to say and that joint has no mechanical fasteners.

Good morning everybody! It’s cool here this morning I could have used this weather Thursday while I was digging out tiles. And apparently the mosquitoes are out and about because they left their calling cards behind.

The old world joinery is so cool, especially with the tools available at the time, dovetails

It amazes me what they were able to get done with the tools they had to work with! And I’m so curious about the adhesives they used in some of the more delicate pieces. I know what we use today is probably superior to what was available years ago. But then you see something that has withstood the test of time.

I don’t have but a couple pieces in my own home pretty much everything I’ve built has been for gifts. I try to go traditional with modern tools when I can this is one the hooks are held on with screws but everything else is old school. IMG_4200.jpg IMG_4199.jpg
Probably my first attempt at mortise and tenon but it’s held up really well. The dogs have even tackled it a time or two lol.

Hyde glue , yep from some parts of a cow . I work with a guy from England , who started his apprenticeship in middle school, the work I saw him do was an education for me. I was in my early twenties, he’s was in his mid seventies
He started in the rough mill , with a smoothing plane , he explained it to me, wow

It’s amazing what you can learn if you’re respectful and it’s obvious you are listening and soaking it up.

Exactly the mindset that I've kept as I go through this.. it's just a mailbox post made from reclaimed deck beams. This is a learning experience, if I hosed it up so badly that I needed to scrap it, I would have done so.

Marty, your coat rack looks great!

I'm mostly tooled up for metal fab, so it's fun to switch to wood. Too bad there's no filler wire for pine, I'd run some MIG beads at the seams...

If I'm ever fortunate enough to get a small shop built, I'd love to dive a bit deeper into the timber frame type of construction joints. I never had anyone around me who did that growing up, I just remember seeing that type of wood work on a few school field trips to historic sites around Maryland. It's probably why I was watching Norm Abrams on Saturday mornings.

Same with the wooden boat construction, I was always amazed when I would go as an adult, to East Port ( next to Annapolis) when the boat yards had Open House days and you could see the hull construction up in person. I remember seeing cabinet making books that showed Japanese joinery methods, and the hand tools to create those masterpieces. It's OZ-T level perfection.

Gunny is making sure I get my exercise in this morning . He will swat his toys under the refrigerator , stove or TV stand and then let me know he wants his toy . I'll lay down onto the floor with a flashlight and a long metal rod and retrieve his toy

Within a few minutes he's tossed another toy out of reach and I'm back on the floor retrieving another toy of his

Because... Cats. I've always been much more of a cat person than a dog person. Though I have had both. The seemingly much more complex and complicated "personality" of cats in general has always fascinated me. I'm a huge sucker for the 4 legged furry friends we have.:drunk:

Pool noodles. I put these under every gap in the kitchen that Rugby would "Wayne Gretzky" his springs underneath of. Now it's a game of him trying with every ounce of his will power to stretch far enough to grab one and pull it out. It's fun to watch.
