MermAndy was in a mood this afternoon. I guess it was something I said. I asked if he wanted to go to happy hour with my nephew and his fiancé but he just wanted to stay home and sulk. He missed out.

 

Something funny from that same shop, I thought about all of the fish catchers.

I’ve read about those Marconi stations. Antennas that were a mile long and oriented at specific bearings for shipping communications. That would be a neat place to visit and do an activation from.

Mike and I had a good time over on the USS Alabama yesterday. The radio club has modern radios set up in the decoding room of the main radio station on the ship, that’s where Mike and I were at. Several of the ship's original radios are functional and several club members were in period correct uniforms and were transmitting Morse code off of the old radios. Other club members in uniform were explaining the radios and what was going on to people touring the ship. It was a pretty neat operation.

 

Yes, there was two stations, send and receive in town. It was operating until the late 90’s by MCI. You couldn’t catch anything on the TV except for static pulsing Morse Code. They have the transmitter set up which is about half the size of a short sea container. They have lights in the place are set up to dim with the pulses from transmitting just like back in the day. They have a movie playing narrated by Walter Cronkite who was a ham and donated the voice over to the museum.

 

MermAndy is sitting out on the deck, having his morning coffee, a smoke, all with his morning stubble. What a sight.
