Roto-Rooter just left. Main line is clear, so they say. But the tech didn’t exactly ooze confidence in knowing what he was doing. They tell me the problem is in the septic… The honey pot is coming out to take a look. Emergency service = cha-ching.

Do you use any treatments on your septic, like these?

The house is rarely used. It’s a summer home on the Cape. So not much goes into the tank on a yearly basis but the tank was pretty much filled. There’s supposedly a filter somewhere in the system, either in the tank or in a separate box before the tank. They suspect that needs to be serviced.

They say if you use an enzyme treatment regularly you shouldn't ever need to empty your septic tank. Unfortunately most cleaners tend to kill off the good enzymes in your septic. I think replenishing them on a regular basis is a good idea. Particularly with how expensive septic repairs can be...:spending:

I'd increase the frequency to every month when it's in use and a double dose when you close it up in the fall. Maybe even a double dose to kick start the season when you open things up again in the spring. I reckon the freeze up there might go deep enough to stop the enzymes from working through the winter. After all regular maintenance is generally cheap compared to repairs on most things.

I have another 6 years until I can retire from the federal government with full benefits. I really thought hard when the early retirement offer was made a few months ago.
