I was sort of in the same boat. I was tired of the 60 hour weeks and relentless pressure. I put together a plan to go part time, a plan that included a backup consulting job in case my employer told me to pound sand -- which is what I was expecting. Went in, told them I wanted part time, covered my face waiting for the blowback, and my boss congratulated me! I went to 3 days/week which really didn't work because I was still working much more than I was being paid for. Slid back to 4 days/week and that has proven to be the 'sweet spot.' I show up when I want on Monday, take Friday off. And I like my job again. And I can still buy toys. :):):)

I'm 63, turn 64 in May. My target is having a job until I qualify for Medicare, then we'll see what happens.

EDIT: As for savings: I'm putting 40% of my income into my 401k, making up for lost time plus it keeps me from spending it elsewhere. I put some after-tax money into company stock which I can buy at a discount. House and kids are paid off, we decided on a shorter mortgage term so we wouldn't be saddled with a mortgage in our 60's. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I pay cash for any large purchase; I don't buy it if I can't. Interest can be your enemy and it can be your friend. Make it work FOR you.

I've used quilts and sleeping bags.
My sleeping bags are now at work. My garage is now trashed. So now I just pray.

I'm trying to wave pro's and con's on everything. I have to work 6 days every third for the sat. I think I may try to convince the boss to let me take a day off during the week for my sat. There are guys that work every sat and get two days off. So I don't see what I can't. Then I'm thinking on going to a 4 day work week as I will still be full time missing the one day.
I trying to get to 3 day weekends. Still trying to figure out some details....

I've been saving motors etc to build a garden tractor puller with 3 engines if I wanted to go through with it. However after watching vids and such and the class I was thinking on building for it is sooooooo BORING to watch. So will need to reevaluate that path at some point. I saw a nice 4 cyl mini Rod around here so I found a couple of pulling clubs. I'll have to check them out next year.
