This is cold for us. But at least we're not looking at negative numbers like a lot of y'all.

Soap bubbles are fun too. However both require you to be outside LOL.

Wow that is spendy! I might have, may have, at one time, many years ago just used a distillation flask and worm tube condenser to do the same thing. Not as pretty but only $30

    Yep, Lord Kelvin

I knew that heat transfer and fluid flow class in nuclear power school would come in handy some day LOL.

I really chuckle to myself when we're doing something with the waterlines at work or digging ditch for waterline. Someone always comes around and asks why aren't we going deeper to get below the frostline....we don't have a frostline! We just go 18" to keep the vehicles from smashing them.

I've always kept our freezer at 0f, but never really thought about it until reading when we recently bought a new one. Found that you could still have bacteria grow at 15f. And I'm sure there are some somewhere that can grow at lower. I'll have to ask the daughter.

Lisa is out shopping now and going to look at me some new ones. Don't like the clingy, high waisted ones I have now. Looks like Kohl's brand may work.

I like wearing fleece lined jeans as opposed to LJ’s, not as cramped. Being from the great white north I have both.

I heard a party going on lastnight. I shoulda walked over there and had one of them try it. Sounded like they were drunk enough to think it could happen here.

A few years ago when it was real cold for a lot of days the frost got down 6 feet. Besides water pipes freezing there were some people whose septic system froze.
    We got lucky, nothing froze.

Good morning folks. My friend just texted asking if I heard anything about a fire about a mile up river from the LTVA. No, but that's an area with privately owned properties and a bunch of rv rental spots. So my guess would be dry brush, stupid people, fireworks and alcohol were all a factor.

    Happy New Year to everyone.

Sure you laugh now but the next ice age is just around the corner. With all the pollution that evil man, and especially the evil US, is putting into the atmosphere it has caused the record low temps over the last decade. We are accelerating the lowering of the temperature of the earth at an alarming rate and you will be in a freeze zone before you know it.

Oh wait that is what they taught us in science classes in the 70's. Now man is causing global warming. Erh never mind carry on.

Actually I was just researching this the other day wondering at what temperature it is safe to start putting surplus food outside. Provided can protect it from the mink and weasels and whatever else runs around in the cold. The FDA recommends keeping freezers at 0 or lower because that is where bacteria finally has a hard time to grow and multiply.

I do know that most home freezers have a hard time getting much below that. I used to shoot clays at below zero quite often and would get squib loads once in awhile. Discovered the shotgun shell wads were cracking in my reloads and ended up working with Kevin at Downrange Mfg. who manufactures the wads I was using. He had a hard time finding a freezer that would go down into the teens and twenties below zero to replicate the scenario I was shooting in. It took a commercial deep freezer to get that low. Turned out it was a primer and powder combination not so much the wads.

And as I just walked by the downstairs bathroom to check laundry thought I smelled something so ran the water in the shower to make sure the trap is full. And remembered I never covered the manhole covers up on the septic tanks with leaves when they pumped them a couple of months ago. Think I need to get some bales of straw ASAP.

Happy new year and Mornin Easterners. Sitting at a balmy 29* on our way to mid 40's today. Pretty much typical for us. Had to order a new phone as the old one has finally gotten to the point of diminishing services and returns. It's been an ok run. I think 5 yrs.

Also, if you want to make jerky out of game meat, don’t know about Store bought, you need to freeze it first for at least a month before making jerky.
