I hear you Mike love to build stuff with wood, but HATE finishing it. All I use is tung oil mainly modified. In the past Waterlox as a filler mud coat and Bennmatte as a top coat. Thought I'd give Minwax antique oil finish a try this time and like it so far. As much as you can like something you hate anyhow LOL. This is the first time I've used filler\stain in almost 40 years normally don't care for it but wanted the pre 64 Winchester\Ithaca red look. So tried Art's Herter's French Red and very pleased with it also. Still a lot of steps and work though. Hey there are likely a few on here old enough to remember the Herters catalog! Personally tested by Jacques Herter Jr. on five continents....

I've done some stocks using mineral spirits mixture slop coat to fill the grain. This is after whiskering several times with white vinegar.
I like tung oil for a finish, adding a touch of spar varnish to it.

Beautiful finish Mike. I love refinishing old guns to their former glory almost as much as I enjoy shooting them. I have a CR license and own my fair share of MILSURP rifles and pistols but really would like to start expanding my collection of store brand shotguns like Western Field, Sears etc. Ithaca shotguns always seem to demand a pretty penny on the online auctions. Post pics of the finished product, I can't wait to see it.

More test fitting with mock up plate. Found another oops. Forgot to make passage to lower part of box for jack connection. Nothing serious. Lol

Couple more weeks I think.... Still have to make a ground plate for strings. Shape and cut the top nut.
Make and shape the bridge and check string height. Check intonation.
    Work in progress..........

    Thank you so much

Oh yea. File and shape the frets...
