If I may make a recommendation if you're just doing some limbing and are leaning toward a chain saw, check out the power polesaws. They keep the work out in front of you and puts some distance between you and the turning chain. You still have to be cautious and have respect for it but I think you'll have more confidence.

You can even get them in electric, cordless or with a gas powerhead like a weed eater.

Need good upper body strength for them - although jaapsheep probably has more than I do :anonymous:

cool thanks Martin... it might be something to consider. Sometimes it's trees fallen on my fenceline and those are 8 inches or more, but other times I'm just cutting branches that are bending my fence over. The jungle is always trying to intrude ;)

used a battery powered one to chop down and chop up 4 ~ 10 - 12" diameter maple trees.

I'm not so sure about that... I used to be tough, but my shoulders and neck have really taken a beating and working above my head is pretty hard now. Even wrestling sheep is getting too hard, I put off trimming feet so long last year they ultimately trimmed their own feet on the hard ground. I am wondering about a small chainsaw though, maybe even an electric one, something light. I think the skillsaw was some sort of right of passage, it sure makes cutting plywood easier than using a hand saw!

A sharp chain is a happy chain and, you are correct. The 3 I mentioned have different weights and balance points so a person has to compare all 3 as well as consider how available power is to run either the electric or recharge the cordless. We have a few cordless and gas powered.

They make life a little easier than swinging a chain saw around and are great for limbing over the roads. We have to keep a pretty high canopy clearance because of the taller 5th wheel and cabover campers. I'm even considering one for my loader that's hydraulic driven. My loader has a 13' lift reach plus whatever the saw would have so it would be somewhere between 17' and 20' plus have the hydraulic tilt and downforce.

I have the Stihl combi unit with the pole saw as my first attachment. Then got the blower and tiller.

Couple of weeks ago did my first ham and bean soup in the IP. Did the left over Christmas hock first to get broth, let it go for 2 hours high pressure and got 6 qts. of stock that would have taken 24 hours on the stove with the stock pot.

The beans in the IP turned out the same texture and taste wise as any other method. In a blind taste test bet no one could tell the difference. Did have a few of them split open though. So I wouldn't use it if Royalty was coming to dinner. Wait is me I'm talking about, not a problem.

Damn Jim glad you and everyone else is OK. Hope you still feel OK in the morning. That does suck about the truck but you can replace that. You not so much.

Just got back from picking up the son from the Amtak station. Yeah ice and snow suck. What would have normally been a 2.5 hour round trip was 6 hours. Tired. Had the truck trying to go sideways more than once. Wore out getting too old for that shit.

Before I left had ice hanging from it.

    pre trip truck.jpg

Now it is covered in ice, slush and salt. Son and I counted more than 200 deer on the way back they are still yarding. Almost took out 2 on the trip.

    Deer.jpg

Snow supposed to go until 5 AM so will blow and shovel in the morning. Truck slid sideways into the top of the drive and was afraid to go any further. Did I mention that I'm getting way too old for this shit?

    Small useful for me stuff.
Glad you went and got checked out. Take it easy still, you may be sore for a couple of days. Sorry for the loss of the truck.

    RIP Gunny.

For you all playing with snow and ice, just be careful. We don’t need any holes in personnel.

Well, I’m sitting here catching up, getting ready for bed, and it sounds like someone out there is having a gunfight. I heard 3 shots and a pause, then 4 shots and a pause, then 6.:infantry::fenforcer:
I guess I’m not in a very good neighborhood. :notsure:
