I've seen this happen to a couple friends with step kids ... if the foundation for respect and fear of the consequences is not instilled when they are little, it's often too late by the teenage years. Some can be turned around, some will never be. :frusty:

    Good morning everyone!

I was talking to one of my sisters last weekend and we were discussing kids, she is a grandparent now. Her take is the kids are a lot of work, pain and love. And she told me hopefully someday I would have grand kids and find out they make it all worth it. Not sure I am ready to be a grandpa though LOL.

Winter is landing here, or at least the start of it. Just came in from taking the dogs out. Need to dig out my heavy winter gear if I'm going to take the pup up North and spend all day in the woods.

@Cold Iron a quick Grandpa story

    Mike,
I don't know how popular the Haribo Gummi candies were in the 90's here in the states, but they had always been popular overseas. I had been bringing back Haribo Gummi Bears since my first trip to England in 1985. We were assigned to RAF Mildenhall from 1994 - 2001; our two boys did almost half their growing up there, and they were crazy about the Haribo Gummi candies. Flash forward to 3 weeks ago on our Phoenix trip...in the grocery store our 5 yr old grandson picks up this tub of Gummi Worms and takes it to his Dad, who tells him no and to put it back on the shelf. As I walk by the shelf I pick up the tub and place it in the cart; my son looks at me and says, "Dad, you're not helping any." To which I replied, "that's not my job, I'm the Grandpa." Best Gig EVER! ;)

Morning drive by guys & gals
Lots of posts to read & catch up on.
Sounds like Susan is feeling better, Mike's son is in remission (thank god)
good kids, not so good kids,
successful hunting & trips with dogs.
Work has been busy keeping me off the web lol

My 81 year old Mom quit her job yesterday because her employer wanted her to go to 3rd shift.
She is healthy, dependable, and a hard worker despite her age.
She has worked this job for 37 years.
It has been harder for her due to Vermont winters. Us kids do our best to help her.
My Dad passed in 96 so she has been on her own.
I won't get into the company she worked for because it violates COC.
I just wish they had more class...
In the end, she took care of herself
    /vent over.

Don't get me wrong, he is a good kid and has a great heart, he is working on his Eagle rank and looks like he will graduate. He dosen't do drugs or drink and I am grateful for all that, last night was just....:annoyed: he has no motivation past the end of his nose. And yes I have turned everything off and taken everything away. I even had him stand outside in his shorts and told him that is what he has if he moved out. 'Meh' is all I get.

And yes. I know it could be worse, I have seen worse, hell, I have been worse. :D

@MQQSE Rob yeah Gummi Bears and worms were a big hit with the kids when they were young Stateside too. I could see me doing exactly what you did and laughing inside the whole time! When talking about retirement and where to live a lot of people have said it depends on where the grand kids end up. Even though I don't have any, and may not ever, I can see how that would be an influence now...

@simon's Hi Judy  Glad to see you drop by even if it is a hit and run LOL! Hope things turn out well for your mother. Mine is down in NC near my youngest sister, wish she was closer so I could do more. Glad she has family near to help out, especially in the winter. Hopefully the retirement will be a good thing for her even if it isn't what she wanted. Sounds like if it doesn't work out for her she just might up and get another job anyhow!

That right there puts him head and shoulders above the rest. Cut him some slack; how motivated were you at his age?

BTW, my two brothers and I all made Eagle. Me with OotA and bronze star (extra badges). When my younger brother got his (the third in line), my mother got a certificate of merit signed by President Carter. The accompanying letter said something to the effect of "you're doing it right".

Roger did you go to Camp Seneca in the summers? I earned my NRA Smallbore Distinguished Expert there. Obviously I was not focused on merit badges at Boy Scout camp, I saved all the money I could ahead of time and lived on the rifle range. IIRC it was a nickle for 10 shots at each target. I was one of the few to ever make Distinguished Expert and still have a Camp Seneca mug they presented me around here someplace.

A brandy new Bass Pro opened about 5 miles from here last night. Wasn't gonna go, but a friend talked me into going for the grand opening thing.
Crowded as hell, of course, but they did an outstanding job with a Long Island Sound theme inside.
Might be a cool place to pick up a part time gig when I retire in a couple years.

I went to Massawepie (had to look up the spelling!) 4 times. Last time I went, the troop paid for it, as I was the only scout left in my troop that was old enough to be leader. Second time out, I cut my thumb very badly, and wasn't allowed back in the water. So, no swimming badge that year. I still have all my badges and regalia in a box somewhere. And the scar on my thumb.

As I remember, the rifle range was included, but we were only allowed to go there once or twice.

    Same as everybody else...
Just saying hey to everyone. I've been on TW since about April of this year and just stumbled onto this thread. I'm 56 years young, married for 25 wonderful years and have 3 kids and 10 grandkids. Nice to see us older dudes out enjoying life and their tacos. My rule for living life is to always remember it's better to be over the hill than buried under it. Peace...

Ah the other Iroquois named BSA camp! The Toller sitting in the empty 12 lb. keg of gunpowder in my avatar is from Cayuga kennels, I had to keep the Cayuga in the registered name. To stay in the Iroquois traditional I named him Cayuga Sheshequin Sniper, call name Sniper. Obviously my experience while young being around Iroquois names and history along with the time on the rifle range has had a long term impact.
