It’s funny.
One of my buddies daughter went for her drivers test.
Practiced with all the bells and whistles.
They had to shut off all the warnings like blind spot etc and put a piece of paper over the rear camera and park. Couldn’t do it.... FAIL...

 

Dude you need to get out 4 or 5 times and walk behind and look.
It’s called exercise.

Good morning all.

I use the side mirrors to back the truck into a space. Back up camera is for me to get nice and close to the car behind me. I did use the camera to hook up the boat trailer which was nice. But I can't back up just looking at the camera.

Speaking of parking spaces... About 10ish years ago I was on vacation with the 96 Cummins out in Cape Cod. I pulled up along a space in Chatham put on my turn signal, pulled forward and put it in reverse. Guy behind me though he was going to take the only spot on the street with his fancy BMW. I just continued to back up... Lucky (for both of us), he had room to back his car out. I got a few thumbs up from the crowd on the sidewalk for that one.

Reminds me of the Seinfeld episode with George and the parking space...

 

Good morning everyone, Hump Day. Going into work late today. Taking truck into body shop this morning. Someone hit my front bumper at work a few weeks ago. No major damage, but has to be fixed. It was nice they didn’t bother to leave a note, asshole. Enjoy your day kids.

 

I don’t have backup camera
I get exercise

I’d rather have front and rear recording cameras with asshats around

 

I average around 3 times out

 

I see that a lot.
They record everything.
Some shut off like 30 seconds after ignition off.
So when I pop the hood I wave to the camera .

 

I have a front only and haven’t installed it
I got hit in rear last year old man tore off his front end on my hitch and asked why I backed up lucky I had a witness

 

I use the camera because It's there. Don't use rear view mirror. Use outside mirrors mostly. Grew up on a farm. Got good at backing...backing trailers... backing wagons....no cameras there. Could "see" cameras on the back of big farm equipment.

 

All kidding aside..
Cameras have no depth perception and you come up on something so fast without realizing.
I see much more rear bumper damage now than in the past.
Like anything else it is a tool to assist. Once it becomes a necessity then that’s when it gets to be a problem.

My situation is so much different from lots of people.
I have a portable one. I use it once a year to get my boat out in the spring. I don’t want to turn my wheel anymore then necessary on the soft ground. So I kinda use it like a gunsight. I aim for it and back up. I get out like 4 times to visualize the offset etc. it doesn’t help me per say, it saves my lawn.
I pull my boat to my truck. I pull my utility trailer to my truck.

I still back up to other trailers. Don’t use the camera

 

My trailer is small enough I pull it also. Don’t want to smash a plate light

I have a drop hitch , receiver is behind plate but still don’t want to break anything. If I drop loaded trailer I make a lot of trips out to check before hooking up

 

Year ago people would back up until they hit the step and tow. Didn’t make the plate look to good but no issue with bending anything. Lol

 

Thats why i like it. I usually get out at least 4 times with the other truck!! LOL and use side mirrors.
