Well as someone who spent many years fixing planes that were older then I was in most cases , you would be surprised how fragile certain parts are to stress in the wrong direction lol.

    Turning This :
    RF4cNopolish.jpg
Into this Sans the polished blast panels behind the motors SUCKED . I can't find a picture with all the SS/TIT panels behind the engines , nose cones on wing tanks, intake lips and anything else the Wing King wanted polished. Oh and he wanted us to make the paint shinier .... it was semi gloss polyurethane paint soooo lol @Casper66 will understand this one lol. A bit of MEK and tada a gloss paint job with semi gloss paint...

I do not know if this still stands but Structures, Machinists, Welders, Corrosion , Crew Chiefs, and several other AFSC's did the work to bring all these planes back to static display we got them in crates and on flat beds and put them back together and then some . We even had to get one from Korea the F84 or 86 can't recall because the one they dug out of DM you could sneeze on and the skin would have a dozen holes lol .

This B-17 was found in a swamp in Papua new Guinea in 1972 . It crashed in 1941 after running out of fuel into a swamp

It was recovered from this swamp in 2006 and currently being restored at the Pacific Aviation Museum. It has been nicknamed the Swamp ghost

    wing king?
still a snazzy looking plane regardless of the paint job.

i hope you guys had good instuctions for hte reassembly! that would be a task...

I have not been but the USS Arizona Memorial and all WWII related sites would be top on my must see list whenever I do get down there.
I believe I spy a SBD Dauntless in the next to last pic...my dad's dad was stationed in HI during WWII. He worked on the mechanic crews keeping planes in the air. Mainly the Dauntless's. Dad has a model of the Dauntless that he is super proud of - its got a 2' wingspan. My aunt found a shoebox of old photos in a storage shed when we moved my grandma from a house to an apartment years ago. Lots of photos of my grandpa during his years in the service. I lot were water stained and ruined but I spent a good couple of months scanning and patching things up in Photoshop. I'd like to go and try to find some of the places in the photos if they still exist. I'm sure most of the buildings have changed over the years or are gone completely though.

    FYI .....

The Arizona Memorial has been closed now for over a year due to structural fatigue issues to the dock were the tour boats load/unload tourists

This monument possibly could be closed indefinitely as the damage is to severe and costly to repair

Here's an update on the Arizona Memorial

I did not know this! Hopefully they can make the necessary repairs to reopen the docks...got to keep our history in the present so to speak.

I go to Hawaii ea year as my Brother lives in Kailua and we go to Pearl Harbor alot . This last December when I was there the tour boats will now only sail past the monument then sail by the USS Missouri from stern to bow then back to the auditorium docks where the tour begins

They do slow down as they pass the Arizona Memorial but are 100 yards from it

I'm not much of a boat person, I can't swim. So taking that trip would be a huge feat that would require Costco sized portions of Dramamine o_O

Those tour boats are big and very safe and are operated by US Navy personnel , nothing to worry about

I've been whale watching on a 150 ft boat in Alaska and survived. The only time I got a little bit panicky was when the tour guide announced over the PA that if we were to continue on a straight course from where we were the next bit of land that we would see would be Hawaii. I was thinking, "yeah, let's NOT do that..."!

OH, and they stopped the boat kinda sudden like which freaked me out. I thought the engines died. Turns out they had stopped to pick up one of those stupid styrofoam coolers out of the ocean.

    Trauma. Mental trauma.
