Yup. I've seen Fat Albert do a JATO. Amazing how something that big can get airborne that fast.
When I lived in AK the guys from Elmendorf would bring the C130's down for touch and go's at the local airport. If I was lucky and was walking on the beach at the right time I could usually get them to "wiggle the wings" on approach.

Had a day like this today

Which led to thoughts of this towards others...

    Then I had some

And my day went more like this

    The end...

What got my attention always was watching loaded C-141 Star Lifters or C5A Galaxies land on one of El Toro's 10,800ft runways . Landing these heavy birds always resulted in a brake or tire fire . Taking off fully loaded these Birds used every square inch of the runway

Read the BBC report on Notre Dame and really just made me sad....
The upside is that a lot of folks have pledged to help rebuild it and I believe they already have pledged over $700 million so far to help rebuild her and that is cool...

I watched a couple of C5’s do combat takeoffs on a base I was on overseas and man, super impressive, rotate, lift off, 90* hard bank turn and then up and away, all after winding her up on the runway to max noise and then go... Still remember that so clearly as I was on the roof of my gear putting on the seam caps and it looked like the thing was level with me on his 90* hard bank turn...

I took a MAC Military hop to Honolulu in a C-141 , I'll never forget that experience

Yep the older A & B models had that very unique sound especially during thrust reverse

The free fall school at YPG has one for the jumpers plus the rescue helicopter and I rarely hear either of them. MCAS Yuma on the other hand just gives me a headache when I'm down there. Jets are annoying.
