We got home from neighbors a little while ago. Graduation party for their daughter. Old folks were leaving and kids arriving. Its going to get noisy, kids, fourwheelers and fireworks. At least they live 1/4 mile + away.

Which base? They turned one of the bases in San Diego into a really ritzy housing area. Some of the bases that have been turned over have just gone to the dumps. Vallejo and March are really sickening.

What a weird week. The whole thing just felt disconnected and ended with me going to get a couple fittings only to have my work truck go down with only some power at the ignition, no lights, starter or windows. 2 hours from the time the wrecker was called it finally got dropped off at the dealer and I got back to the office.

No, he came on his own. There's 3 of us that are in pretty tight and make sure things get done and have each other's backs. I was going to call my wife and have her run me back to the office to get my Jeep since I was only half mile from the house but he insisted. So that was cool.

I have been in So Cal for all of my 50 years and have been in many. There are many variables like @US Marine answered but also population density and distance change it. When it's close to you you get the sharp P (primary) waves. They hit the hardest and travel fast but don't go as far. They are the sharp fast movement. The S (Secondary) waves are the slower rolling waves that are slower but can travel much further. They are the motion of the ocean waves.

We are about 80 miles away from Ridgecrest so I knew when the slow but strong waves lasted for over a minute it was a large one but at a distance. It slowly built up from here then subsided and built up again. My wife was starting to panic but I stayed calm and told her this is not going to cause any harm here. It was a slip strike fault meaning two plates are moving side by side.

In contrast in 1994 I was about 5 miles from the epicenter of the 1994 Northridge earthquake. It was a lesser 6.7 but it was in a more populated area and a blind thrust fault meaning one plate is climbing over another. The initial quake tossed everything around the apartment I was in. Even the mag light which I always knew where it was rolled away and was hard to find in the dark. 2" cracks were on every wall and all the stuff in the kitchen from cupboards to the fridge was dumped in a pile. Power was lost so it was dark as could be. It was completely hard P waves followed by S waves. Every aftershock after that you could hear coming from the distance like an ocean wave of a low rumble from all the buildings moving before it got to where I was. It also caused a lot of freeway bridges to collapse. This caused a huge headache for months for commuters trying to get to work. It worked out for me because my 30 mile drive avoided all that and I got to work in 20 minutes instead of an hour. If it were to happen again I would be FKD because I now live north of where most of them collapsed and work is south.

The good thing is earthquakes cause a lot of damage but there are usually not that many casualties. Unfortunately in the Northridge one my High school friend's dad was a CHP motorbike officer who died when he drove his bike off the 5 and 14 exchange which had collapsed and fell 100+ feet. It is now rebuilt and named after him.

Small world....my wife and I work at the same place as your high school friend did for years.

When looking at the aftermath of the Northridge quake it amazed me how one house would be sitting with relatively no damage right next to another that was off its foundation. I guess now that I think about it, the same can be said about fires, tornadoes, and hurricanes.

    Morning
Heavy rain, t/storms and damaging winds yesterday.
Next door neighbor had basketball hoop fall over. Not sure if it hit her Mercedes.
Haven’t seen it rain that hard in years....
Wind still to high to go fishing...

    Oh well
    Glad I went Thursday..
