    Salmon run? I’ve heard horror stories about it from some mates in Alaska of tourists fishing illegal or getting pissed at locals that kill it fishing for food and took their trophy from them. I’m not into being around others fishing and not being from around here if I see someone else fly fishing I just leave as I figure it’s their spot anyway. Met a really great old timer doing that. Explained why I was leaving and he turned me on to his old honey hole that he’d still be fishing if he could still get there with a cane.

    yup. they call it combat fishing. the sportfishing industry it heavily regulated and opportunities to wade into the rivers like that are always crowded. regluations dictate that you walk in, stand, fish, and follow your same footprints out so as to not disturb the gravel beds and the salmon eggs. hence why fishing charters on boats are so popular - its easier access and your're almost guaranteed to catch you limit while not disturbing the spawning grounds. when i lived up there my folks came to visit and i had won a salmon charter trip in a silent auction which i sent my dad and ex husband on. they caught their limit in a couple of hours. according to dad he had snagged the biggest fish but the other guys on the boat took off with it once they docked. they grabbed the biggest fish and ran, leaving the rest to my dad. still some pretty damn big fish by MT standards.
    and while probably not 100% legal my ex was a commercial fisherman and we would keep a few fish that came off the boat every year. all residents are allowed I think 3 salmon per person in the subsistence fishing regs. most people would max out while we only kept 2 or 3 between the two of us every season, we only kept what we knew we would use. no waste. subsistence fishing AKA dip netting is a fucking mess. slobs. the beaches would be littered for weeks with all of the trash and shit people would leave behind. it was disgusting.
