That was at Monomoy Wildlife Refuge aka Chatham Ma weather station. The dog pulled her way down the path from the parking lot to the water. She seemed to have that smile all afternoon.

We're kinda getting ready to do the same thing. One road we're going to swap out the old culvert in a crossing and putting in culvert that is actually big enough to handle a big charge of water. Another road has a low water crossing that was never "armored". So we're going to have it poured in concrete. But, on both cases, there will be detours around the construction. I'll still get "GD'd" over it from the visitors but that just comes with the territory.

    No. I was too pissed.
But heres me on the first leg of my journey. Waiting at the gates of Yelly for 30 minutes.
    0802191205_HDR.jpg
And heres me 4 miles down the road where I hit traffic.
    0802191222_HDR.jpg
And another 2 miles down the road 30 minutes later
    0802191310.jpg
And another 5 miles along, 30 minutes later
    0802191246.jpg
All in all, from the time I stopped in line at the gate to the time I stopped at Madison Jct, 14 miles down the road I had spent almost 2 hours. 2 hours to travel 14 miles. And for nothing. There were no animals out anywhere. I have no idea why people were just stopping in the middle of the road but they were. Pullouts were empty and road wa full. people were oblivious to the fact that there were hundreds of cars stacked up behind them.

Hope you guys do a better job of notifying the public than they did here.

well this was on a one lane dirt road with no detour.
This is the only mention of it I can find on the whole FS website. And it doesn't really specify when the closure starts
    https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/btnf/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD645750
NOTHING on the closures/special orders page
    https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/btnf/about-forest/?cid=stelprdb5295878
NOTHING on the ranger disctricts page
    https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/btnf/recarea/?recid=71401

Just a sign on 8.5x11 paper tacked up on the side of the road in the middle of freaking nowhere. could have put the notice at the parking area just off the highway, save me at least the last 15 miles...

The Davidson River wiped out the bridge into the Brevard Fish Hatchery in Pisgah National Forest when I was there. They brought in several government agencies including the Civilian Conversation Corps (yes they still exist) and did it right this time.

    Bridge isn't going anywhere now.

Surprised me it wasn't that way to start with. Downstream is also the Cradle of Forestry in America visitor center.

I'm willing to bet you could land a Chinook on the deck on the backside of it. Some people complain that the government over builds. Until what ever it is wiped out and gone.

I went for the direct/shortest route. Took the long way home today and I'd guess I saved myself at least 3 hours of travel time.
google maps says my route down is 215 miles and 4:30. Was more like 7:00
route home is 216 miles and 4:02. I made it in 4:20. Would have been faster but I got stuck behind two motorhomes in potato land and couldn't pass

These detours will be with 500' of the respective crossings and these roads are nothing like you guys have. Not near as remote. But the PIO does public announcements for important stuff like what you experienced. They may have had more signage up that blew away or got stolen. That stuff does happen. People do get stupid and want to steal signs in natural resource areas for some reason. I can't stick up for the "forest circus" because I don't know what or how they did it, but stuff does disappear. I've had entire signs and barracades stolen over night.

Yup, I'm just a dozen miles or so down the road.

I've felt two shakes since I got home this evening. Just happened to be stopping for a rest after unpacking when I felt the 3.6 one. And another 3.3 just a bit ago too. I actually have the USGS site and the U of U seismic site opened up in my browser right now.

All those red squiggles at the bottom I've felt. This is a seismograph located just outside Yellowstone on Hebgen Lake, about 75 miles away

I try not to overbuild too much but the usual rationale is we want that stuff to last. Not everyone is happy with what we do but (like puppies and truck drivers) they quit whining after a few weeks.

I can see that happening....but nothing on the website? Come on....

The 8.5x11 sign was stapled to a 2x2 of particle board so maybe somebody needed a backer for target practice.

I kinda want to call the FS tomorrow and just play dumb, see what they say if I let them think I'm coming down this next weekend.

Call and complain. I tell our visitors that all the time. They may not know something is broke if you don't tell them. Even if it's something in my realm, I may not have time or dollars. This way it gets in the system and it'll come up in someone's email and it'll get attention. When we get a complaint it goes out to a bunch of us. Plus, if I need support from Engineering or Contracting or whomever, I have that base complaint documented and it gets attached or used in the process.
