Good morning! 24 here and light snow, but nothing accumulating thanks goodness. Still above average temps though. Supposed to warm up a bit in a few days. Going to be hard to get used to the cold when it does finally hit with all these warm spells.

Where was I stationed: San Diego Ca., Alameda Ca., Bremerton Wa., Pearl Harbor, Hi., Orlando, Fl., Pensacola, Fl., Tidewater area in Va., Wellsboro, Pa., and Asheville, NC. Might of missed a couple. Being on ships (at most places) they were just home ports and spent much of my time at other places around the world. Miss it but somethings I don't. Wouldn't mind taking a cruise someday and being just a passenger.

    Good Morning All

... especially my two fellow WingNuts carrying on in here; I'll play:
Pope, Scott, Balikesir (remote Turkey), back to Scott, Mildenhall, and Elmendorf.
Pretty short list for 26 years active duty; I met the right people at Scott, back in the good ole' days. ;)

    And good morning Chief

... speaking of cruises, I'd like to take one of those European River cruises someday.

Me too but first want to do one of those Alaskan cruises LOL. Was near Adak in early June one year and started snowing hard. We went up to the flight deck and we all ended up in a snowball fight. Someone hit a FA-18 hornet with a snowball and the airedales freaked and made us go back below decks, absolutely no sense of humor when it came to their birds ;).

That was back when we played games with the Ruskies and would do a show of power as close to them as we could legally get. Even took the Coast Guard with us when we went in from Alaska.

Those aren't the worst assignments in the Air Force. Geez, back in the day we had tons of crappy assignments in the middle of the coldest parts of America. Only a few of those are open now.

Not to the same degree, but the game is still afoot up here ... just not on the same scale or as frequent. Great pic!

Let me know when you get serious about the Alaska cruise, seriously.

Don't buy into the scheduled shore trips through the cruise companies. I can either guide you personally, or help you plan an itinerary that you can follow with your own rental car or RV. I think a lot of folks miss out on a lot of Alaska by being tied the cruise company's bus schedule; having the flexibility to wait out the weather, or go when the weather is right, is critical up here. When my wife's aunt and uncle came up, they cruised up one way from Vancouver, BC to Seward, AK. We picked them up in Seward and they spent 10 days with us doing and seeing all around south-central AK before they flew back home out of Anchorage.

Oh, you would have been one of the few to love Loring AFB. :) Guam was the assignment I never got acclimated to. I came from Germany and arrived there in the winter. Yikes!

Thank you Rob! That is what pretty much everyone else has told me including my mother who did the cruise. Ideally would love to drive there with the flyrod and time it to hit a salmon run. Time off of course is the issue, I would have to give up some time hunting with the dogs and birds. Work is still interfering with life... Used to read about the Alaskan Highway in the 70's and it has always stayed with me and would love to do it someday. Even if it is more civilized now

I can relate to that. Sometimes I forget that other branches of the service are on Guam too. At least you didn't go from Minot, ND in the winter to Guam LOL.

No, but Germany had a brutal winter that year, then I stopped in PA for a visit and it was a brutal winter here. Then arrived in Guam in late January. Got such a bad cold, I was coughing up chunks for four months. At first it was pretty cool to have eternal summer but that got old fast. I wouldn't say I hated that assignment but I didn't care for that heat and humidity every stinkin' day.

Absolutely! We haven't done the AK Hwy either, but hope to someday.

Yep, work does that ... but you gotta have the funds to play. I'd dig a hole pretty quick if all I had was free time ... as my wife will attest. On my terminal leave from active duty I started doing all the projects around the house I'd always wanted to do, but never had the time. When the Lowes bill came in, my wife said, "old man, you need to go back to work." I was like "but it all went into the house," thinking that justified it, she just reiterated, "yeah, go back to work."

I don't think I'd do well living the island life, nice places to visit, but I think I'd miss the change of seasons. :notsure:

Yeah... I love the change of seasons too. I would love a place that changed from Spring to Autumn to Spring to Autumn.... over and over again.

I lived there for 5 years, 72° almost every day. Couldn't find a job, though. The 1980s were mainly military and medical jobs. Sorrento valley was just starting but not hiring.
