3.8's, whew, I remember 9's were fast. Safety harness must hurt when braking from that speed!!
With the increase in speed over the years has the strip length increased too?
Still 1/4 mile but don't they need more blacktop to stop?

 

Fuel cars only run to 1k ft now and have been since 2008 after the tragic accident involving Scott Kalitta

The shutdown length ( track area from the finish line to the sand trap / catch net) is 1320 ft

 

So 1k =.62 of a mile, -.25=.37 of a mile to stop. Holy Cow!!

no, correction, stopping distance would be about .52 of a mile. Still, I think I would loose my lunch.

 

do they have brakes? Or rely solely on the parachute?

 

Yes they have carbon fiber 4 wheel disc brakes and the parachutes are automatically deployed by a sensor located in ea lane 100ft before the line

They mentioned later in the broadcast that the oil tank became pressurized from engine failure . Fuel soaked oil sprayed all over the carbon fiber body and the fire burned very hot

All in all a good 3 day opening for the Museum, 125 people about $3400 weekend with admissions and PX sales, only 2 arseholes that refused to wear a mask and we refused entry. Busy three days for me, but at least the utilities were covered for those three days.. Doing it all again next Fri-Sun..
