My 1999 2.4L 4 cyl had a normal oil change interval of 7500 mi. even though the dealer pushed 3500. I wonder why Toyota changed it to 5000 with the Gen 2?

Every 3-5K for me. The factory interval is 5k or six months. I don't drive that much, if it's getting close to six months and I'm still under 5k, I will look at the oil on the dipstick. If it's getting dark it's getting changed. But my experience with recent Toyota engines has been that 4500-5000 miles is just about right.

I´m new tacoma owner and I just change oil on my taco it has 57,000 miles, here in Guatemala syntetic oil its expensive, its between $11 and $15 each quart, so I just put Quaquer 5w30 full syntetic, I hope to change oil again after 5,000 miles, I don´t really know if this oil its good enough??

Modern oil is far superior to the old dino. Changine oil on the taco is so easy that i do it myself at every 3000 , but, i think 5000 is safe. My wife has a mb and the intervals are 13,500 with mobil 1 . I use the oil on sale at auto zone because i change it so often i only drive 10,000 a year............

When the 10,000 mile OCI was first rumored, I called my dealership. It was from a service bulletin and applies to the 2.7 engine only. The 4.0 is still supposed to be a 5,000 mile OCI (which is silly and wasteful, but keeps the warranty intact).

I assume it is either out of warranty or about to be, if your warranties are similar to those offered here (U.S.).

As long as it's quality synthetic oil, you could double that oil change interval easily. If you change the filter and top off the oil ever 5,000 miles, I would be fairly comfortable going 15,000 miles between full changes, but I'd probably send a sample of oil from the first 15,000 mile change to a oil analysis company to be sure it was still OK.

5,000 miles for me. It's what Toyota recommends. I switched to Synthetic at 5,000.

I used to change it every 3K but now I go about every 5K since I'm running full synthetic. So far so good.:D

I currently change my oil every 6 months using Mobile 1. I do the same in my Jeep with 260k miles on it. I do not count my miles, and have never had a problem. Last year I have my GJC engine broken down to replace the head gasket. The mechanic said my engine was extremely clean and he was surprised of the mileage stating that it look like an engine with less that 30k miles on it.

I believe the oil sludge problem Toyota had with some of their engines inspired this change. I've also heard it was to simplify things. While my truck is under warranty I'll stick with the 5000 mile or 6 month oil changes. Once it's out of warranty, I'll probably extend the OCI. I use Mobil 1 and K&N oil filters. I feel I can safely go farther, but I don't want Toyota giving me crap if by chance I have an engine failure.

9531.jpg I have a 2005 TRD, it's got 415,561 miles on it. That's right, 415,561 miles on it. Every 7000 miles OEM Toyota filter and royal purple full synthetic.

Wow! What (if any) major issues have you run into in that time? I just hit 100k and i'd love to get another 10 years out of it!

2007 with 189,000 miles. I've changed the oil at 10K, with a new filter at 5K since new using Mobile 1. Based on what I've seen that is probably conservative, I could go 15K with a filter change every 5K. The truck still runs and drives as good as when new. I've never added a drop of oil between oil changes.
