5100 .85 stock coils and 1.5 aal

    hi all, I have looked and haven’t found much on this setup wondering if anyone has ever set bilstein 5100’s an .85 on stock coils and added a progresssive 3 leaf 1.5 aal? Would it be too much rake? would .85 with no aal be better? Would it help with carrying a load in the bed or towing?

    My current set up is a 2014 DCLB sr5 I have a are shell on it which makes it squat a little more in the rear the back sits about 1in higher then the front and I wouldn’t mind gaining a little more rake back I do have the 4 leaf pack on my truck from the factory (Canadian). I’m not looking to lift my truck much more than a inch or so I just want a better ride and be able to maybe hold a tad more weight I’m the bed for when I go camping. Thinking of going this route with the 5100s and aal or even just setting the 5100s set at .85 on the stock coils only. Just wondering if anyone has gone this route and what it is like.

    .85 is fine up front, but go with a single leaf AAL or airbags.

    Progressive AALs are not as strong and won’t handle weight well, especially when you add more. I used the same setup (and had a SnugTop XV) on my Tacoma before eventually being unhappy with it and upgrading again.

    Did not like the 3 leaf AAL, it was a big disappointment once the shell was installed.

    Thanks, Do you think air bags would be the move to do for a more “long term” soulution? Which would have a better ride with just the weight of the shell plus maybe a constant 100lb in the bed of gear and bed platform? I have read that the single aals can be a bit of a “harsh” ride? I’m not afraid of a stiffer ride as I am used to driving a f550 for work every day and that is a stiff ride, so the Tacoma can feel a bit too plush for me sometimes.

    They’re not harsh.

    Anything will be stiffer or firmer (your pick of words) than OEM, but there is a slight increase in stiffness when you compare a single leaf AAL to a progressive. But that really comes into play mainly when the truck is unloaded. With a shell or constant load you wouldn’t notice much difference.

    The ride quality benefit or a progressive pack is only really on an unloaded truck, and they suffer far more than a single leaf AAL does with a constant load.

    As far as long term, leafs are springs and they’re wear items as are air bags, but either one will last a good long while. Just a matter of if you want any added complexity that airbags would bring it if you want a purely mechanical solution that is as simple as possible.

    Ok so I’m thinking of going bilstein 5100 all around .85 on stock coils in the front and doing a 1.5” single aal in the rear “thinking wheelers 1.5”. I’m hoping the 1.5 single will get me about 1” with the weight of the shell? Really what I’m looking for is about a 1” lift all around and ending up with 1”-2” of rake. The air bags seem nice but they seem like that could be a pain having to adjust the psi for different loads and I never tow I mainly never really go over 500-800 pounds of gear including the shell when I’m loaded up.
