5100 billies

I want to start off by saying I don't know much about lifting or raising trucks. But i want to get some 5100's billies for the front but don't know what to do about raising the rear? My truck is an 05 TRDsport Don't know if can still get the rear TSB done since the truck is out of warranty. I want the 5100's set at 1.75 so what do i do about the rear lift guys?

 

Any recommendation

 

I dont think you need to be under warranty to get the TSB done. But if you cant get it done, then just the the AAL.

 

You can add a aal in the back to lift i but the rear is gonna sit way higher then the front if u put the 5100 at 1.75.. even if u put the billies at 2.5 the back will sit a tad higher with the aal.. hope that helps

 

And just to add to that i have mine set at 2.5 upfront with no aal and the front is a tad higher. with the 5100s set at 1.75 it should be close to level. But have you looked into blocks in the back? if your truck isnt under warranty and you still want to lift the rear....id look into blocks.

so a silly question, but if I'm about to get the TSB done, can I just hand the dealer tech's a pair of 5100's and get them put on at the same time for a "lift?" I mean, I know it's not part of the TSB to replace (I have the TRD), but maybe I can slip him $50 or something.

If so, they should be set at, what, 1.5" to keep the truck looking like it already does?

 

There is no or minimal additional work involved in changing the rear shocks to the ones of your choice while the TSB is performed.
The dealer already gets paid for the job by Toyota. Remember that the only aggravated party in all this is you because you have to bring the truck in and swapping the shocks will make you whole again.

Doing the rear shock swap for you costs the dealer hardly anything in time and money.
You have new shocks and the dealer has a very happy customer.
Everybody wins, I wish it was always that simple.

Have the service rep talk to the mechanic if s/he doesn't understand what you are talking about.
If they still want to charge you more than a few minutes for the swap tell them that you consider that an attempt to get paid twice for the same job and find another dealer.

The rear shocks don't provide lift, the TSB spring job does that. That's why alignment is included in the TSB job list.
You can take advantage of this by having the front lifted (at 1.75" for the Bilstein 5100's, I'm told) after the rear spring job and then have the alignment done afterwards.

Here is how you tell them to do it:

1. rear leaf spring job - TSB, Toyota pays
2. Front shock swap/lift/leveling job - you pay (dealer rate for replacing stock shocks, no accessory nonsense charges)
3. Alignment job - TSB, Toyota pays again
4. Have fun

If your dealer doesn't want to do that, remind them that you are bringing in an almost level truck which will not be level at all after the TSB and that they must work with you on that or you'll go somewhere else.

(Don't ever try to pay a mechanic directly when s/he is on the dealer's clock....)

Now to just get some 5100's...

 

so i want my truck to sit level or a slight rake. i want the front set at 1.75". to get the look do i need a 1.5" aal or 2" all? and my truck is the non tsb because i'm out of warranty

 

Simple:

the billies have 4 settings to set the front end at - 0, .85, 1.75, 2.5 inches

so if you do a 1.5 AAL in the back, your best bet would be the 1.75 setting.

this would basically raise both ends evenly and your rake would be just like it is now.

 

I have an 07 trd with the billies set at 1.75 and 1 1/4 block in the rear. Truck sits dead level ...maybe slightly higher in the rear. My rear springs have sag so I probably needed more lift in the rear then others. I would lift the front first. See how the truck sits. Then lift the rear with a jack under your hitch (if you have one) until the truck sits level or has a slight rake. Measure from center cap of wheel and bottom of rear fender before you lift and after. Should give you an idea how much lift you will need. I wish I had installed an add a leaf. Friend gave me his blocks so it was a free rear lift. Here is the only pic I have...Hope this helps.

Now...will i have any issues or problem if i run aftermarket wheels that are 17x8 with 265/70R17 tires with lift setting that i'm anticipated on doing?

 

If the wheels have the same backspacing (offset) as the stock ones....then no the tires will be fine
