Yesterday I was on a long, bumpy forest service road drive. The front end was feeling much bouncier than it should. I didn't air down, and just attributed the behavior to that. It was also making a light squeak with every bump.

I didn't look at it until this morning and discovered the cause. My dust boots, which have a spacer to hold the shaft of the strut in place, was resting down on the strut body. I was confused as to how this could happen so I checked the other side - same issue.

I'm guessing I messed up when assembling these. Is there a washer that goes on before the dust boot? If so, I obviously didn't put it on. I'm taking the day off work tomorrow to tear the truck and strut assemblies apart and fix it. FML

This is the third set I've assembled. I'm can't believe I did this.

I dont think there is a washer. but they are suppose to stay straight up and down on the shaft. Maybe something came loose. Or worse case the shaft maybe bent. I have ran them many times before but it has been awhile.

just thinking out loud but the whole in the top of the boot isnt big enought for it to have play on the shaft. An should be tight. Hence shouldnt ever move. interested in learning what you find. Good luck!

I have a set that I just took out. They only have 30K miles on them. I was going to sell them, but I plan on taking the coils off and looking at how they're set up before breaking into the truck.

The shaft is definitely not secured on up travel.

The dust cover should setup snug in the top hat with only the shaft going through it then a lock nut holding the shaft secure to the top had. If that makes any since.

    The bushing should be squished
    image.jpg

Okay, here's what I just found...

The dust boot slipped down, on both sides. All that's there is the plastic. The spacer and bottom bushing feel like they are in place. Super strange. I tried to tighten the lock nut on top and it feels like it's maxed out, but I'll try again and see if I can get some squish out of the bushing.

Maybe the bounce was just the tires and I coincidentally found the dust boot "issue".

    so strange....

I'm headed for a run - I've been really stressing about this while I was out today. I'll come back and look at it with a clearer head in a bit. I'm interested to hear any thoughts.

Ouch. Looks to me like that top shaft nut isnt very tight. Im pretty sure the shafts diameter increase stops the dust cover from coming down that far. Not exactly sure what you got going on there but something isnt right. Wish I was closer I would help you take them off and we would just find out. HA!

The shaft is quite narrow. There is a machined lip on the shaft that the spacer hits. The plastic dust boot has just come off. Still strange though. I will push it back into place because it'll drive me nuts.

The dust boot isn't important. I've never installed it on my 5100s and they are fine. Ever notice the nice coil overs like Kings, SAWs, and Fox don't even come with them.

Something on the top looks wrong to me. Seems like that washer below the bushing shouldn't be there. Usually the 2 bushings sandwich the top hat with1 washer below the nut. I think the additional washer goes Below the lower bushing and it holds the dust boot up?

There should not be a washer between the lower side of the top bushing and the upper plate for one thing (the thin washer in your photo)

    Edit, great minds think alike!

Yeah, definitely aware of that. I didn't realize it would come off so easily though.

Yep. You're absolutely right. I think it was supposed to go under the dust boot. I guess I'm still breaking into it tomorrow. Shit.
