    Back on topic...

I'm sure the washer in question keeps the lower bushing in place and doing its job (when installed correctly). The lower bushing is currently being abused, which would explain the appearance of the upper bushing.

Yeah, I bought one the last time I did the job. It's the 3rd set I've done and I figured it won't be the last.

Pretty sure the washer that's supposed to be under the top hat not being where it should have been, (on top dust boot) allowed shaft to go into the top hat more than it should as the suspension was working, causing the dust boot to get pushed down. That probably is the squeak you heard.

That's also likely the reason the top bushing isn't squashed. Without that washer, as you tighten, it would just clamp down against the bottom of the top hat more. Which would push against the dust boot.

I think you may find you need new top hats. I would think the shocks would be alright, minus the dust boots.

Hopefully the holes for the shafts to slide through aren't rounded out from excess movement

Good info here. OP this would be a great excuse to yourself or better half to upgrade to a 2.5 fully adjustable coilover. Just saying. Ha

These are brand new top plates, 885s and 5100s. I'm done with upgrades for awhile. Every mod this summer has been a struggle.

Check them out when you get stuff apart. I'm just thinking as pudge151 said, the holes going through the top hat for the shaft, may be jacked (at least on the bottom side), from the part of the shaft that holds the dust boot up, riding up inside the integrated bushing that's in the top hats. In either case, the top hats are cheap enough to replace, if need be.

Also having a tough time looking that shirt, that thing is nasty.

I got in and reassembled the 5100s with everything in the correct order. The top hats had some minor wallowing from the rod, but not enough to concern me. The truck rides as it should now.

When I upgrade to better coilovers, I'll part these out and toss the top hats in the trash.

Rode OMEs for 8ish months, including my trip to NM, had a set of Fox 2.5 RR DSCs and TC UCAs waiting for me when I got back. Done. Not looking back.

I've never run OME struts, but the 5100s work pretty well for my current uses. I'm done spending money on the truck for this year. Mostly

Same here. I have a plan to keep my word, though. If I spend any more money on the truck, I won't have any money for the wedding and the fiancee will murder me, thus making it my last year with the truck.

I'm in the middle of a river raft build, my mountain bike needs work, my work trailer needs axle seals, I need to buy a split board before winter, and hunting season is just around the corner. And I'm in the middle of moving.

I also convinced one of our more inventive members to reinvent the wheel, so to speak... That's where I will end up spending a little more on the truck this year. That's a top secret project, though - until it's ready to sell.
