So I got 5100s put on my 2015 taco. I love them! But I have been reading about them and they are the same length. I thought that the left and right sides are different lengths for stock shocks. So why does the 5100s work when they are the same length? I am a newbie to suspensions

I guess my question is, is it okay that they are the same lengths and why when stock shocks are different lengths

All shocks are the same length, but the stock coils aren't rated for the same weight. The stock driver side coil is rated for a heavier weight because the gas tank, and driver are both on the left side of the truck meaning that the driver side would be lower if the stock coil rates were the same for the driver and passenger side

So OEM shocks for the Tacoma are the same length??? I get the coil and spring issue. But I thought that the shocks were different lengths

Yes the shocks are the same. Coil springs just have a different rating due to more weight on drive side

Thanks. I was just wondering because the left side, the boot is a bit squished vs the right (passenger side). Just wondered the difference.

“Some” put spacers (nominally 1/4 inch), on the driver front coilovers. Some coilover sets come setup on different height clips/rings. This is to compensate for the driver side lean caused by the weight of gas tank and drivers butt.

The boot is squished because the boot is squished.

Sorry, I meant to say that the 5100s that I am talking about are the rear ones, not the front ones

The boots slide around under compression and extension. The accordion design is supposed to allow them to move but in reality they get kinked up pretty quickly. That is of no consequence since the boots are a guard for the internal component of the shock. If it bothers you, get under there and adjust the boot and cinch it hard with a zip tie on the top... it won't stay correctly positioned for long though...

So this would explain why if you buy the Bilstein 6112 with coil springs you set the snap ring at a different notch from driver side to passenger side, but with the 5100's you are using the stock coil's so you set both of them the same
