I'm search the threads and can't really find anyone having the same problem but, I just took my truck on some dirt trails to try to locate/find a fix for the clunk I hear. Here's my setup:

    5100s on all 4 corners.
The front billy's are set at 1.75" with stock coils
New 3 leaf pack in the back which provides about 1.5" lift in the rear
Tires are Hancook Dynapro ATs 265/75/16

Is it possible the stock coils are too short? When I was on the dirt trail and hitting the bumps a little harder, I hear a clunk noise. It seems like its the suspension and not the brakes because I won't touch the brakes and hear the clunk.

Maybe I should go with the eibach coils? Thoughts?

Should post pics of the whole coil so people can see if it is put in correctly. Should be no clunk at all. Stock coils are plenty long enough, since you are compressing them and making them smaller I am sure it is not them

He saying he's using stock coils with the 5100's.

Stock coils are fine to use with 5100's. As Unchained said, they could be installed incorrectly. The bushings at the top might be missing. Any number of things could cause the clunk. If you can, try to get some close up pictures of the suspension.

I get some noise but it seems pretty normal after hearing it in other trucks. It may be feed back from the steering rack...

Did you loosen your LCA's at all?

Sounds similar to a lca bolt that's not tight enough.

Just put in struts on my 2004 Taco. Reading through a ton of forums on clunk noise, could be anything.... used a stethoscope to find the noise and believe its the sway bar link. Yes, the 2nd gen Tacos don't need to remove that link, but I also loosened the LCA bolts to get the arm low enough to install.

A little worried I didn't figure it out, but part comes in tomorrow. i'll let you know.

    stock UCA's?

theres the problem. The upper ball joint flexes to its max before the end of the stroke of the shock. Essentially the Upper ball joint limits the down travel of the front suspension and not the shock. This causes the hard hit.

Make sure your coil spring is seating good and is Straight. I had a clunking type noise after installing my 5100 then I realized I didn't have the spring seated properly.

    Good luck

Yeah I think UCA's have absolutely nothing to do with it. Bushings or spring seat, but we are all waiting for a pic of the full coil set up

If you're running without dust covers you should've grabbed the spacer from them and put them below the lower metal retainer. From bottom to top on the strut shaft it should go:

    dust cover spacer
    metal lower retainer
    rubber bushing
    top hat
    rubber bushing
    metal upper retainer
    top hat nut

Also, This obviously does not include the rubber bushing that seats the coil on the top hat.

Leaving out any of these parts could result in a clunk.

Thanks everyone for your response. So here's the deal...I took them off myself originally and had it set at .85" but there was too much nose lean. So the next time around I took it to Midas to adjust it to 1.75" because I hate dealing with those POS autozone spring compressor (I always feel like those things are going to burst open). I'm going to do a thorough examination and post pics. Hopefully, it's just the way the suspension is sitting. It's really annoying though because sometimes just braking, I'll hear something (clunk) shift around.

    Thanks again.

Just an fyi. You don't need the those junk spring compressors to change out these coil overs. Theres a very safe decompression method while leaving the bottom of the coil over still bolted in place. I've used it twice with 2 different trucks changing over to 5100s.

Heres a video. He has a disclaimer of course, but the method is very safe. Many have used it including myself. The main thing is, the coil over is still bolted in place so there is no where for the spring to escape to. It's very simple and makes the whole disassemble very quick.

I just did the 5100's at 1.75 and now want to put the Eibach Springs on. Who's up for it? This does look kind of easy.

Check to see if the lower bushing washer (sits on top of dust boot) was transferred from the old shock. I had forgotten to do this when I first installed mine...
