This is what I do, being 5’9” and having a Leer topper. My platform is 48” long by bed width to be above the wheel wells and I have another piece of OSB that bridges the gap to the tailgate. I find that I sleep well, often legs slightly bent. Pop the topper window in the am and stretch my feet out. All of my clutter lives under the platform. A second occupant might mean ground tent time.

Makes me wonder how people lived before the internet. I guess so many questions just went unanswered.

Easy to solve: Access Cab = longer bed.

NO ONE regrets buying a long box, no one. Don't even think about a sb for 2 people. Remember that it's nice to have your hands above your head sometimes. At 5'10", even my long box gets tight with 2 or 3 of us back there.

I’d definitely recommend the long bed, even if you are shorter. I’m right at 73” tall and I could never get very comfortable in my long bed. I also found that sleeping diagonally didn’t work as well in reality, especially if you are ever going to have two people in there.

Wow a ton of answers. Yes I know I could fit diagonally, and I know I could also sleep with my legs slightly bent. My real reason for asking was to find out how quickly it gets uncomfortable. I think several of you answered that question. Sounds like I need to keep waiting. I was just getting the feeling that I may never find a DCLB offroad in AG or LR with only a few random vehicles being allocated every 2 weeks at best. I sold my Subaru to pay off my wifes car so I could get her ok to buy a truck. I guess I am stuck riding an XR250 for the next 6 months thru Florida summer lol. Sigh It's still worth it.

I make extended sleeping platforms for the short bed that allow two 6' people to sleep comfortably with the tailgate down.
Let me know what you think! Link Here
Even with my long bed I typically sleep with the tailgate down since I'm 6' tall, I like the fresh air and a couple of extra inches of toe room.

I have a 2015 DCSB with a custom sleeping platform/drawer system in back (build thread here). I'm 5'6" and I have slept on it now for maybe 40-50 nights, all with the camper shell and tailgate fully closed up because mosquitoes up here are basically the state bird. Some thoughts:
    • I sleep diagonally on my platform. It's do-able and I can live with it but each person's comfort level varies.
    • I sleep on my stomach with arms stretched out undr pillow which decreases space quickly. If you sleep on back or side it would be much, much more tolerable.
    • Two people? I hope you like the other person because you'll basically be on top of each other.
Here's mine for an idea (old photo but the only one with bedding on top, I need new pics). Whole megathread here for other sleep platform ideas, lots of good options that go from basic & cheap to totally Gucci with kitchens and water and such. A sheet of 3/4" plywood with braces underneath is a quick way to do it and might cost you like $100 depending where you live.

Buy the extra foot and make everyone happy. Make sure she wants to go on a second trip with you! If not, it may be highly likely there will not be a second trip.

Solo would be no problem, but 2 people, that might be issue if either or both move around in your sleep much. Also no room to stretch out even for solo. Worse case, you both lay diagonal, and spoon with knees bent, will be most comfortable...assuming you are both not big movers.

My 2 cents is, as long as price, and finding a 6' is not the issue, go with 6' bed. Keep in might want to check your garage depth, or you might just be swapping one issue for another.

I'm 5'5" wife is 5'3" we sleep in our 5ft bed. Just got a Bambed platform for it. we're both side sleepers so it's not a huge issue that the bed is slightly shorter than we are. When our kiddo (eventually) gets taller than us, we might have to rethink things.

If sleeping comfort is the deciding criterium between a long bed and a short bed pickup, I suggest an RV.

Get a 6' bed. I slept in the back of my 5' bed for years camping. I'd leave the tailgate down and the shell window open...I'd drape a tarp over the shell window. I used to be 5'8"+. Last time I camped like that it got down to 31 degrees at Convict Lake in the Sierrra's.

I don’t understand everyone’s aversion to regular tents these days (the ones not attached to the roof). You don’t need have to move everything out of your bed to make room to sleep back there (or give up your bed completely to make a it into a full-time sleeper). And they make some really nice, big, affordable tents that set up/tear down in about 2 minutes now (that are a fraction of the price of a low end RTT… not to mention you don’t have to haul around a huge 200 lb. box on top of your truck all the time). Seems to me a lot of people spend a shit ton of money for the convenience, only to find out it really isn’t very convenient 99% of the time.

I just fit-tested myself in my Sport DCSB...there is no way, I would be comfortable in there by myself let alone with my wife.

I'm 5'7" and wife is the same height.

I'd buy a RTT and either mount it on a bed rack (Cheaper $764.99) or buy the Diamondback ($1799) plus Yakima Outpost HD Rack ($1199).

But that's the expensive side of me talking.

Wife does not go camping nor does she have the desire to go...so, it would be just the DB Tonneau cover for me & my truck!

For "normal" camping trips it's a tent for me. But when I'm volunteering at races and need a place to crash on overnight shifts, truck bed is my go to.

In a perfect world, I’d have a longbed too.
Two kids makes double cab a priority.
A stubborn desire to prove to the auto industry that people (myself especially) prefer a manual transmission means only available in the shortbed configuration.
