I had my 5k service today but the lady said they're not changing my oil. I asked why and she said they usually change it every 10k miles. Is this right? Just in curiosity.

Yes, every 10,000 miles is the default for oil changes for Toyota care. Each dealership may or may not offer to do it more often. My oil was dirty at 6200 miles so I paid $70 to have it changed. I will do mine every 5,000 as it is my truck.

I have attached the brochure; you will see oil change is ONLY at 10,000 mile intervals.

I just can't wrap my head around changing oil every 10k. I kind of developed a rapport with a service advisor at the dealership who owns a new Tacoma too. I told him I'm not changing my oil every 10k. He kind of pulled me aside and said, "we'll work it out, I'm pecticular about my truck too" I only have 850 miles so we'll see what happens at 5k. So in Toyota's thinking, they say "two years of free maintenance", so that basically translates into about two free oil changes....whoopeeee!

Yup! That's 5 times every 5,000 miles at $70 = $350 that is alot of money you save on a $40K truck ... LOL (sarcasm) Thanks Toyota!

It's correct, but I still had them do mine at the 5k.

I just had my 5000 mile check up. Brought it home and did the oil change myself. I wanted to make sure it gets done correctly. Probably will let Toyota change the oil at 10,000 and 20,000. I'll do it myself again at 15,000.

If you do it yourself, make sure you have the Toyota wrench for the filter canister and be ready to drop the skid plate to access the filter on the V6.

Warranty goes until 60k. If changing your oil after 5k would cause issues, they wouldn't recommend it or wouldn't offer the warranty. Trust the engineers.

Mobil 0-20w. I used Mobil 1 in a RAV4 that went 185,000 miles trouble free so I thought I would stick with Mobil. My V6 Tacoma took around 6 quarts.

My truck has the lube sticker due date at 5k from the dealer. And that's what my service advisor recommend doing oil changes.

People get overly excited about changing oil early. Like they know more than the engineers who designed and tested the system.

I got a few free bottles of oil from a friend who sold his rig that took the same kind ours does. I wanted to see how to do it and all that and thought why not. All it cost me was a filter and some time, so why not.

Oh and it was messy because the center filter drain plug was too tight to remove, so I had to take the filter off all at once. I do hope Toyota takes the time to remove that plug so it's not so hard next time :)
