Why didn't you cut your fenders before the paint job?

 

I added some Velcro to the side of my console, and CB handle so it's more secure.

I haven't painted my fenders. Only painting I've done recently is on the new wheels which I don't want to put on before making clearance.

Well I've finally caught up with this thread... Only took an hour

Anyone have suggestions for a cheap CB radio I could pick up for the trip? I doubt i'll use it for much more than this trip, so not looking to make much of an investment. Any reason not to go with a cheap CB walkie?

 

Low buck radio that is decent..? Cobra Ultra IV (or III if you happen to find one still on the shelf) Can be had well under $50 less antenna. I've got one in my garage hooked to a car battery that I use as sort of a base station.... Antenna on top of roof.

From what I know, the hand helds work OK...just very limited range with shorty antenna. They can be hooked to external antenna via coax.

My personal favorite is the Cobra XLT Classic. Around $129 at most truck stops. Can be peaked to around 10 watts. (CB's are sold new @ 4 watts or less

What kind of range would you want as a bare minimum on a trip like this?

I just got this last week. So haven't installed or even played with it yet.

99% of the time, you won't need much range for communicating on the trails. You'll seldom need more than a 1/2 mile, if that. Just about any radio will cover that need. I like to use mine while on the interstate. A GOOD radio with a good, well tuned antenna will cover 8 or 10 miles in most conditions. 5 miles is acceptable. You won't get much more with a 4 watt "stock" radio. In most cases, the antenna is more important than the radio.

 

I'll probably hook it up some time this week if I can get home at a decent time, or this weekend.

 

I do 'em in stages. Antenna install is one job. Then running the coax from antenna to radio location is a project. Then pulling power/ground and mounting the radio is a separate job.

Don't power up a CB until you have the antenna connected AND the mic connected. Powering a CB without those things connected can do damage to the radio.

I guess the sticker on the magnetic base is supposed to be there? It didn't want to peel off easy like, so I left it.

 

And far as I could tell, my coax is not easily removed from the antenna itself. It goes all the way into the base housing without any visible connector.
