Hello everyone, first thread thanks for having me. I have a 2007 Toyota Tacoma 5 speed manual with the 2.7l engine. I am noticing a slight rattle noise in 5th gear and sometimes in 4th gear at low rpms. Seems to happen around 50+. Around 60+ is when the noise gets worse. However, I have shifted the truck into neutral at 60+ and the noise is still there around the front area of the truck. Seems to be coming from the transmission area. Went to toyota and they told me to replace the shifter bushing, replaced bushing and noise is still there. I have replaced the clutch, TOB, pilot bearing, slave cylinder, and clutch master cylinder around 129,000 miles. Truck currently has 138,856. With clutch engaged noise seems to dappen and when the clutch is disengaged noise is there again in 5th gear 60+. What puzzles me is when shifting into neutral and coasting the noise is still there around 60+.

Could it be a bad front u joint making that noise? I went and checked them just now and I could move the u joint side to side a little bit with a a flathead. Is that normal to have some movement? I have greased them recently as well and I still have some movement. Also should have mentioned I have a single cab 2wd. Will update description. So I have a one piece driveshaft and it has a single joint.

Just the u joint is moving. Only in the front. Checked heats shields and they are all tight. Wheel bearings aren't howling but I guess it could make a rattling noise.

Yeah they are pretty cheap and easy to do. Hopefully not lol. Driveshafts are too expensive! I'll post after I replace the u joints. Thanks again.

Will do. I tried looking up my issue online and searched Tacoma World before I set up my account and could not find anything. Glad I joined lol. Getting the u joints on Tuesday. Will update then.

So I ended up getting the u joints earlier and installed them. One of them was definitely bad, the front one in particular. Two of the needle bearings were shredded. However noise is still there. Is this noise something you can live with or is this something that needs immediate attention or it will cause mechanical failure? I have read on the forums that the more you lift the truck the worse the noise gets. Mine has been lifted only 2 inches in the front and 1.5 in the back. The last thing I could try to do is flip the driveshaft.

Did your slip joint have a grease fitting? Mine did not. Im thinking about soundproofing the area with some sound proof foam and just be done with it lol.

Ok. Ill try that. I got some Mobil one synthetic grease. As well as flipping the driveshaft.
