I’ve seen lots of speculation about it and folks hoping they don’t put the same Tacoma 3.5 into the 4runner. It would suck if they did imo. The 4.0 in the runner is a great engine.

I feel like they took the 1GR and put a bunch of minivan engine features on it instead of being a nice big truck engine like the Tacoma had.

    :duh:

It's a rumor, definitely not official!

    with that said, T4R FTW!
Though maybe not in your case, especially if you're having to haul anything fuel related. Even though it sounds like you'll be using the truck bed a lot, but if you know NOW that fuel will be factor, here and there, it's not worth it IMO. Taco makes more sense.

The only place you can call the 4.slow a “nice big truck engine” is on a Tacoma forum. On any other truck forum, you might get shot at.

We currently own a 2016 4Runner and a 2020 Tacoma. In your situation, I would definitely go with the 4Runner. I briefly tried (and failed) to convince my wife that two 4Runners would be a great thing haha.

Also, consensus is the 4Runner will not be redesigned or getting a new engine until 2022/2023 most likely.

They’re have been a few articles out that the 6th gen is scheduled for 2021, looks like they’re going to possibly a completely different frame architecture also.

Hey, that reminds me of a guy I used to work with years ago. He took his fiance car-shopping and she bought a new Honda Accord. A few weeks later he "surprised" her with his brand new matching Accord. She was NOT PLEASED.

Believe they’re going to a frame on body architecture.

That's a Toyota Prado. Looks much more like the GX460 than the 4runner, which is another reason it seems unlikely Toyota will go that direction. This has been discussed to death over at toyota-4runner.org (great forum for anyone interested in the 4runner by the way).

When you say you “tend to haul a lot of fuel”, how much is a lot? If you are hauling around a 100 gallon tank, the Tacoma would be the obvious choice. If a lot is 10 gallon, I would go with the 4Runner. I currently own both.

I could have worded that better. I frequently haul fuel, like at least once a week I pick up a few 5 gallon containers in the summer. I use it for my generator, motorcycles, etc. I am sure I could get some sort of rack for the 4Runner.
