    Wonder if it's possible for the piston to smack the cylinder head without any compression to hold it back. Or some other crazy thing.

    No, that would not be possible. The piston only travels so far. The 3.4 liter engine is also a non-interference engine. Even if the timing belt broke, the valves couldn't hit the piston either.
