I would inspect the bolt for damage.

Checked multiple sources/websites and even a reputable YouTube video. It's 81 ft lb for camshaft sprocket bolt 100% sure.

Well, thanks folks. Wish I had a picture of the whole setup... a 3 ft. long cheater bar on my homemade cam holder tool one side and a 250# torque wrench on the other. I'm such a baffoon!

I've been there, @ArizonaBrian. By the end of my timing belt and valve cover job my brain was fried.

    Valve covers are next. :)

I've done timing belts before on other vehicles and was making good time until this stupid episode.

Just noticed your in Phoenix - Surprise here. At least today was a decent day temperature wise - was putting this job off until it cooled down. Usually when vehicle works is required it's a 114F out and we have dirt for a drive way. Nothing like rolling around covered head to toe in dirt, sweat and blood and it's boiling outside.

Actually was just now thinking a cam holder may not even be necessary - tighten up the cam bolts as good as you can, install the timing belt and tensioner then put a cheater on the crank and lay it over the frame then tighten the bolts. I wouldn't think 81# would be enough to jump the belt - 217# yes LOL - 81? Any thoughts on that procedure?

I like using the holder, but since yours broke it's worth a try! It's a pretty beefy timing belt. Any risk of damaging the tensioner like that?

I wouldn't risk it, but it might work just fine.

I would try using the old timing belt. Wrap it around the pulley, then double it over the idler bearing in the center. Use vise grips to hold the belt together. Or just buy the proper tool.

This is more or less what I did, but just with the cams. Local holders didn't fit. Didn't have the patience or budget to order a tool I'd use once. I used a torque wrench, breaker bar, pry bar, and adjustable wrench.
But you'd need to have marked the pulleys and belt on both sides first.

After torquing the bolt that tight.

I have been thinking will you be able to get a true torque reading.

The fact the bolt or cam did not break those threads really have had to have stretched !!

*** Please just what year FSM did that wrong number come from??

It could save many people from the same mistake.

It's the (c) 2002 edition that's floating around online. The service specification section has it wrong but it's correct in the installation and component sections.
