Don't shoot yourself in the foot.

Thread direction is everywhere at this point, so it doesn't have so much to do with "touchy" people as it does to do with some amount of visitors stayed for engine build info, the build isn't going to happen and now it's talking about drop bracket lifted bro trucks and Tacoma diesel availability which has been a hot topic for at least 6 months in itself. It's the nature of thread flame out. You're 16 which is really not obvious by your posts IMO, and seem to be pretty smart, so don't get all crispy if people get disappointed. I'm sure you didn't expect things like this either when you started the thread, either. ;)

As I said before in other words, it's really refreshing to have a younger kid in here with ideas that aren't the usual ones that are beaten into drums every day on TW and other forums, and as a 16 year old dreamer myself, who didn't do anything with them - I'd suggest wholeheartedly that whatever you think you might want to do at this age, do it. 1 or 100, just go for it. The only failure is when you do nothing.

Lol "crispy" I like that. And Thank you for the complements. I'm still planning on doing this build just not right now as it is not the best time. The only way I can prove it is to actually build the engine, so only time will tell if I'm all talk and no do.

If not, no big deal. And even if it sucks in the end, we've all taken a few $100 bills and cut them up to make a $1 bill. That's part of the fun, no victories without failure.

    Carry on!

Haha well lets revive this thread 4 years later. I had fun reading these 9 pages and it helped answer some of my questions. I will volunteer as tribute to mod the 5VZ now. I have a legitimate reason why though. I got a 1999 4runner (I know not a Taco) but still a 5vz. Im supercharged just recently with the 2.1 pulley, URD piggyback, 7th injector kit, supra injectors. Way faster but its lacking balls still. Shop said I was making 177HP to the wheels. Something doesnt seem right about that. I should be around 240hp at least with these mods.

    -Little background on my build:
    1999 3.4l V6 5VZ
    3 inch lift, 285/75/16 10plys, 4.10 diff
    255k miles
New cats, o2s, coils, wires, TB, MAF, timing belt job, Tundra brake upgrade with t100 master and booster, new PCV, fuel filter, FPR.
Dry compression was ~170-175psi all cylinders
Supercharged @ 252k miles. (2.1 pulley, URD aic piggyback, 7th injector, walbro 190 pump, tuned, supra blue top injectors, Denso IK24 spark plugs)
I make 13 PSI, 91 octane California gas, stock exhaust, 0-60 in 10 seconds.

I just recently threw knock sensor codes. Went in, replaced both sensors and the harness. It was shortly after that I realized I had a head gasket leak. Albeit a slow one that likely just started..... I also have random misfires at WOT. I see plumes of white "smoke" out the tailpipe on cold starts that go away when warm. I did the radiator test kit and the blue liquid verrrry slightly changed to a blue-green, indicating my worst fear. So.

My plan is NOT to just drop in a JDM motor or just replace the HG. Instead, I've decided to go the LCE performance route. I want to specifically build a better motor that will handle boost well and last another 200k+ miles. I have a second motor already pulled that I will be working on over the next few months and am going to get the rebuild kit from LCE with 10:1 forged pistons, ARP head studs, the valvetrain kit, and a 2.5lb crank pulley. I'll keep the stock cams and crank but will send them to get balanced. I will be sending the head to a machine shop to get inspected and ready for this rebuild kit.

Normally, id go with the 12:1 compression ratio but since I'm boosted, 10:1 will have to do. I will start to run Methanol/water after the rebuild to raise octane and prolong the engine while making more power.

Since I have a second motor and don't have to pull mine out until I'm ready, this makes it so much more doable. I will continue to drive my 4runner until this build is ready. I plan to work on this build starting next month and 'Im pretty set on this unless someone has better suggestions. 4 years later, I wonder if anyone has actually done this yet. :threadjacked:

 Bruh did you ever get around to doing anything with the 5vz? And dont worry, we all wish we could delete parts of our life :D

Update for you guys that are interested. 10:1 with boost will be way too high of a compression and ill likely ping like crazy. So if I want to keep the boost, I'll likely drop to 9:1 or maybe 8:5:1 if they offer it. We will see. But 10:1 with 13psi boost is too much for pump gas, even after methanol inj. Still waiting to pick up my motor so I can get the block looked over and resurfaced. Considering Cams at this point but price is a limiting factor...

I haven't done any internal work yet, and I dont really plan too. I did turbocharge it though.
From my experience, if you want power in one of these trucks you should LS or 2JZ swap. It will be more reliable and make waaayy more power for waaayy cheaper. I should have done that in the first place.

Damn turbo huh? Why not supercharge? How is the turbo going and what was the overall cost to power increase? Any issues?

Overall cost wasn't measured. Id say 3.5-4.5k ish give or take 1k

Power gains are easily more than a supercharged truck. A recent traction-less 0-60 was 5.8 and definitely had room for improvement.

Issues? Yes. mainly exhaust leaks, fitment issues and oil leaks. Not to mention tuning, which admittedly I do myself so it isn't great, but its fun.

Hey $4k isnt too bad. I am about that much into it with the supercharger and am not making anything remotely close to those numbers. Also, I have exhaust leaks too...Seems like everytime I fix one, another pops up. And tuning sucks ass on these trucks....its near impossible unless you have a standalone ecu. A lot of the piggybacks, URDs included, are super old and outdated. Makes them very limiting and frustrating to work with....

    Ok update for those interested:

Took my donor motor taken apart completely so my machine shop can take a look at the heads and block to make sure Its good to be machined and rebuilt. Machine shop will be going over the heads, block, main, crankshaft, and camshafts. They will port and polish my intake plenum as well. I will also be having them install my valvetrain kit from LCE so that can alleviate some of the time and potential issues I might have with making sure clearances are ok.

My donor motor has about 210k miles on it, good compression but just a blown head gasket. Its crazy you can still see the factory machining inside of the cylinders! Testament to Toyota's quality. This is a different motor than the one currently in my 4runner, which has a blown head gasket as well along with 145-165 dry compression, 220-240 wet. So my current motor is worn. Ill be trying to drop off my donor motor this week so the shop can do the inspection before I buy my LCE kit. Hopefully in time for the Christmas discount.

I will continue to update as things happen.
