I picked up an engine out of a rolled Tacoma (129K miles) and currently have it sitting on an engine stand in my garage, ready to swap out my old and worn-out engine (330K miles). While everything is easily accessible I'm going to replace the rear main seal, timing belt, idler pulley and water pump.

What else would be a good idea to do while it's out? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Worn out 5vz? Low compression, or? 330k is just a pup if you've changed the oil half a dozen times.

This. They are such a PITA. There's like a million of them. Make sure you replace them with brass so the new ones don't rust out.

They are a PITA to do when the engine is in the truck, that's for sure.

Awesome, these are all great ideas. What about rear cam seals?

You've neglected to tell us why you think your 5vz is worn out? If you just "want" to change out the engine, that's fine too LOL

Well, it still runs and could probably be brought to life with some work. Low compression on a couple of the cylinders. Gas mileage and power are significantly less than they used to be. The replacement engine cost me less than the parts/time I would have to put into the old one. And, I just “want” to haha.

pull the oil pan and clean it out. The spot welded flange for the oil plug sits up a few mm in the oil pan and any small metal shavings/dirt/crap that will not be suspended in the oil when draining will sit there.
Take a rod and center main cap off an look at the bearings. If you are really really worried, plastic-gauge the bearings.

You weren't kidding... there was so much dirt/crap in the bottom of the oil pan I could hardly believe it. Thanks for the recommendation

I replaced my motor at 490,000 because of head gasket with a rolled Tacoma Motor that had 100,000.

Do a full timing belt replacement job, belts, thermostat, antifreeze, seals, etc
Replace fan bracket bearing (Asian) model
    Rear main seal
    Oil pan gasket
Valve cover gaskets, clean inside of covers, DONT OVER TORQUE these bolts.
The valve covers will crack if you do.
    Spark plugs
    Spratk plug wires.
Maybe knock sensors and harness and water hoses under intake if bored. Easy to do now.
My knock sensors went out soon after I replaced the new motor.
Transmission front main seal with clutch if u have a 5 speed
Replace the three heater core hoses on the fire wall and plastic heater valve if it’s old.
It’s made of plastic and wears out from age, plastic starts to crumble.
    Replace oil cooler hoses
Replace all the vacuum hoses and rubber radiator hoses.
These trucks are 20 years old now and the rubber and plastic parts are now at a point
where the plastic and rubber fail from age.
One vacuum leak will make the truck run crappy

These are the things I did except the knock sensors and wish I had done them

You could also replace the brushes on the alternator too.
You could have the fuel injectors cleaned and new O rings installed too.
Make sure heat shield on the truck behind engine is in good shape and not falling apart.

LCE makes a top end rebuilt kit which has all the gaskets and what not for pretty much everything on top of the head gaskets. Other than that there is the knock sensor harness which was mentioned a few times already and the sealant used for the water pipes in the block valley(?).
