0/20 and 5/20 are the same weight hot. only difference is cold. I'd think most people with common sense would beat the hell out of their shit until it warmed up.

...^^^... My buddy was the supervisor at a fire truck company and had a Honda Civic a long time ago.

I remember him adding transmission fluid (to his oil) from the shop to his Honda when he was up at St James Bay Power Station, servicing their fire trucks.

I also remember me getting into his new Civic and it was -25C or lower and the vinyl seat splitting when I sat down.

UL (Underwriter's Lab) would also add it to the BMW portable pumps when they tested them at -25C and lower.

All pumps for fire fighting (truck mounted and portable) had to be UL approved.

Not a wive's tail, I can assure you. I lived up there and worked out of there for a long time also.

PS Coldest I can remember up there was about -44 ... and -40C & -40F are the same.

I miss the Shepard's pie in PQ in the winter and the French fries with cheese and gravy. lol

Thin oil viscosities are used in modern engines due to variable valve timing systems.

If youve ever dissemabled one, youd see super fine oil jets that pressurize a pin against a spring. As the oil pressurizes and releases that little pin the unit is allowing your adjustable cam gear to rotate your valve train.

When thicker viscosity is used it will cause more pressure and less flow (ya know, that Bernoulli shit) and will prematurely wear this spring down.

When the spring gets shot (due to the increased pressure, cause physics is real) it will slap that bitch ass pin straight in and cause your cam gear to rotate on start up and it creates this rattle noise (it rotates back and fourth cause its not locked down by the pin anymore) once the vehicle is warmed up it becomes irrelevant as your oil pressure stabilizes and the valvetrain does its song and dance as normal.

Its neither a good thing or a bad thing, its just a noise that happens quite often in variable timing systems. I hear it from time to time in other peoples cars that have variable systems, which most modern vehicles do even more so today where its both the intake and exhaust side.

But hey listen, this is just like my opinion and shit.

Edit: bonus if you take a shot every time I wrote variable

Seems like it’s pretty easy just to do what the manufacturer calls for. Especially since if you run into trouble they will likely try to deny a warranty claim for any reason they can find which seems to be standard procedure

I've seen it referenced here, the mexican FSM has a table for pil weights based on temps and use, 0w20 to like 15w40 are acceptable. 0w20 is likely rated for maximum fuel economy. I've run 5w30 since my first oil change. If I were towing I'd run heavier viscosity.

I mix 50/50 0W-20 and 5W-20 to get 2.5W-20. Best of both worlds.

Do you have a PDF of the manual? I've heard it spoken about but never seen it. Does it actually exist?

This all depends on climate and elevation …. I just stick with the recommended oil … has a wider temperature range .

it is written in Spanish in the Mexican owner’s manual with a temperature chart. In the FSM (not country specific) it lists 0W-20 ILSAC and 15W-40. If it lists 15W-40 then obviously anything in between is also fine. I can post proof later but I’m on my phone now and it’s too tedious.

I run 40 grade because I like the idea of protection against overheating. If for some reason you overheated, the oil still has margin left to get warmer before thinning out too much. You barely have that margin on 20 grade when you’re already warmed up.

I've considered doing this. Being in Phoenix with 118 degree summers I couldn't care less what the EPA wants I just want maximum engine protection.
