    So much oil talk is based on old wive's tales, folklore, myths and outdated info handed down from grandfathers to fathers to kids. Some stuff will never die.

    By the way....I changed the oil in the wife's Corolla today. You need some gently used juice? I think is was Valvoline 0w20 EP.

    I know, I know....0w20 in an engine spec'd for 0w16!!

    Been doing that since before the Mexican OM was unveiled. I made that choice off of the Australian manuals back then. I was told I was crazy for not adhering to the 0W-20 that the US engine was “made for.”

    And I don’t disagree with that but it’s still a negligible amount and any wear happening is due to lack of oil present, not because thicker oil can’t fit. However there still shouldn’t be much wear at startup. You have the anti-drainback valve keeping oil in the system, the oil itself should cling to the metal for a while, and you have a pump that is pumping as soon as as the crank turns. Maybe a minor increased amount of wear at most.

    I took the oil pan off my Jeep for a rear main seal change 24 hours after it had been run. Thing was still dripping oil. That stuff stays on the parts a while. I’m not saying I think your claim isn’t true but I just don’t think it’s enough to really matter.

    Hey guys, I have some questions and maybe you guys have the answers. I've always been in the 5w-30 camp but recently been paying attention to engine oil boiling points. I know some dino oils have a boiling point around 250F and full synthetics seem to be around 300F. Some thinner synthetics have a boiling point up around 350F. I always thought engine oil temps ran around 220°F or a little higher but recently realized the upper limit oil temp specs for this engine is 140° Celsius or around 280°F. I wonder if this has anything to do with Toyota pushing 0w-20? Maybe you guys know the answers.

    I ran Valvoline synthetic High Mileage Maxlife 10w30 the last couple of years I had my Tacoma. That weight typically has less viscosity modifiers vs a 5w30. I think that last OC I did I had switched back to Synthetic Maxlife 5w because it's now a GF6A oil for better timing chain wear. The 10w was the older SN+.

    Yeah I like the idea of less modifiers, that is why I use it (since my TX climate allows). I run Motorcraft and it is 6A as well, so I have no qualms.

    Good deal. I know 10wXX formulas tend to be older, typically SN+ (which is still decent). I hadn't seen one in a GF6A....but admittedly hadn't really looked. I've got 10w in our old Yaris and was going to switch back to 5w for the 6A rating. But if I can find a High Mileage 10w juice with that current rating I may stick with it.

    And 10w will flow just fine in well below zero temps.

    @BLtheP

    You got me to thinking.....so I poked around. Sure enough, Valvoline's Synthetic Maxlife and Mobil1 High Mileage in 10w30 are now 6A. Must be a recent reformulations. Good to know. I typically buy one of those because Meijer usually has one of them on sale.

    Thanks :thumbsup:

    I plan to. Finding 0w20 in 5qt jugs in stores here is pretty rare. Everyone only stocks 0w20 in individual qts at nearly twice the cost vs a single 5 qt container. The shelves here are loaded with 5w30 in 5 qt jugs of all variations of mobil 1.
