6” BDS lift - unorthodox proposed coilover setup

So the dealer “built” my truck with a 6” BDS drop bracket, Stage 1 kit. I didn’t go Stage 2 at the time because honestly the 2.5” remote reservoir is overkill for my needs. What I didn’t consider at the time was how the stock Sport coilover would attempt to handle the 35” Ridge Grapplers.
So here I sit researching coilover options. I’ve had 2.0” and 2.5” R/R coilovers on a previous truck and I know and understand the benefits. However, my needs don’t warrant Fox’s 2.5” R/R meant for the 6” kit.
My unorthodox proposal is to keep the 6” spacer (yes I know) and upgrade to a stock length coilover such as the Bilstein 6112 or Fox 2.5” non resi. Yes you read that correctly, continuing to utilize the BDS spacer with a performance standard length coilover.
I believe I’m the first to consider this method and in talking to a couple folks that are in the industry and well versed in shock tech, this seems the best method for my needs. Has anyone gone this route?
Anyone out there running 5100s or 6112s with 35” rubber? Again looking to improve the handling characteristics while not taking on the few options out there for full length coilovers for a 6” kit.

    Flame on.

    Obligatory truck pic.

What am I missing with the spacer hate? I don’t have them now on my F150 but I did at one point and had the front tires airborne on several occasions and no issues. What’s different about a spacer on a Tacoma, does the spacer itself fail or the trucks factory components?

It’s not the overlanding norm. But lots of us aren’t overlanders. I for one like a tall truck and flotation tires. That combo works well for me at the deer lease and on the sand at the beach.

Just seeking a little advice but fully aware I’ll get hammered once those guys arrive. Wanting to add a bit more control to my setup without a full length r/r coilover.

    EDIT:
Most spacers just preload the hell out of the factory coils. Actually not the case in most DB lifts as the spacer just makes up the height difference since the cross member is dropped and the knuckle is longer.

So yeah. In my case looking for a factory length coilover to replace the Sport coil that came on my truck. I’d likely only run the 6112 on the 2nd notch on the driver and 1st Mitch on the passenger to help with Taco lean. No additional reload in my needs/wants.

    Just an fyi...
Fox will tell you not to use a spacer on top of their 2.5 coilovers. Just a heads up.

Right and that’s always the case for non drop bracket lifts due to more preload and over extending.

I have a ProComp 6" Stage 1. Sounds like a similar setup to yours, I had the same question as you regarding putting better stock length coilovers and keeping the drop bracket.

Seems like alot of what you do will hinge on how hard/how much you wheel the truck. If it's a pavement queen, you can probably get away with damn near anything. If you wheel, you're gonna be putting alot more stress on all of those components

Are the drop brackets just not as strong as other components?

I would have thought that since all of the stock geometry is the same that putting on better coilovers would be pretty decent off road? Looking at the parts, it seems pretty beefy

Brackets are plenty strong. What you find here but not acknowledged is different types of brocomas. Those that put on considerable lifts to look cool and those that put on super flex hard core wheeling stuff to tell you how cool they are... all the while they’re only running over the same curbs as you at the mall.

Drop brackets serve a purpose and sadly they receive a negative connotation here on TW. I’m not here for that debate and I’m appreciative that this thread has not turned in that manner.

I’m leaning towards Bilstein as I have good respect for their products and their company. The question now is 5100 vs 6112. I like the larger body of the 6112 for the less likelihood of oil cavitation since I don’t need a remote reservoir.

The truck is basically a pavement queen. Sees some fire roads and beach time a few instances every year. Didn’t need a drop bracket lift, but I wanted and like having it for a number of reasons. It’ll likely never be wheeled hard, but driving dynamics are important to me, even in a truck that’s been raised. Calming the after affects of hitting imperfections both on and off-road is my goal.

So I should have updated. I found a second hand set of full length Fox 2.5" with reservoirs. They've been off for custom tuning and are ready to install.

a 2-3" lifted truck on 33s has more ground clearance than a drop bracket on 33s and pretty much the same as one on 35s.
and it won't flex the same.

They are definitely beefy but considering you want better articulation off road you don't often get it from a drop bracket.

dropbracket to me will always just be for looks and not wheeling.
Because the money you would spend to get one to be great off road you can pretty much go LT and it will be way better lol.

9/10 the DB is usually just a brodozer.

Always love the drop bracket hate. Thanks for stopping in.

One the thing the DB has is all of the factory droop, unlike a suspension swap which eats up your downtravel in exchange for “lift” which is actually just an increase in your static ride height.

Either way, get what you want. I’m VERY happy with my drop bracket.

For what it’s worth, I called BDS to make sure I could use the cross member as a jacking point and the gentleman at BDS laughed. He confidently stated that the BDS crossmember which hides the factory jacking point is quite a bit stronger than factory.
