    Until they improve battery capacity they will never make it. Too heavy.

    Considering every single hybrid is faster than its gas equivalent I am sure people will buy them.
    I would buy a v6 hybrid if they offered one.
    To those that thing hybrids are slow, go line up against a camry hybrid. You will cry when it walks off and leaves you. They will walk any tacomas and tundra that have been made so far...

    No more, the batteries are getting extremely lightweight.

    I just installed a battery system on a ferry boat that is hybrid. The batteries, which were the same form-factor as group 31, felt like they were empty, there were that light.

    The battery weight issue has been resolved and is no longer a limiting factor. Charging time, and total range are the only limiting factors left.

    Which is why they are banning hybrids in motor sports. They have a clear advantage.

    Internal combustion is not a great technology for producing performance, it was just easier, available, and plentiful. The curtain is closing on it, and good riddance. It’ll take another decade or so for it to surplant gas/diesel, but it will, because it simply is a better idea.

    I am definitely interested at what specs could come from a diesel hybrid. All about the feel of the driving experience though. Many options on the horizon, hopefully eco requirements don’t kill the best ones.

    While there is some new tech being developed, there is nothing good enough yet. Lithium/Ion is still too heavy, does not have the power density nor can they be recharged quick enough.

    When the tech can power a 5K vehicle 400 miles on a charge and be recharged in 10 minutes, then it will work. Not until.
    Hybrid drives though, are a different story. That tech is right on the cusp of being widely used. Lots of torque, energy recovery (charges going downhill and braking) and not too much of a fatty to be useless
    I would buy a Hybrid Tacoma.

    The reason many people think the Prius is slow is because the 1st 2 generations were. But the 3rd and 4th gens really aren't. It's just that most of the people driving them don’t realize how quick they are. My wife's '15 Prius was very quick off the line when the "power" mode was selected. Power mode told the ECU to dump more voltage into the traction motor and told the CVT to find the sweet spot in the gas engine's rpm. It would easily walk most cars for the 1st few hundred feet. Trucks were always the best. When I drove it I always kept it in power mode. The looks on their faces at a stoplight as I pulled on them hard was priceless.

    When the lease was up my wife picked up a RAV4 hybrid. Stick it "Sport" and it's a blast to drive. So much low end punch.

    Either of them would donkey stomp my 4.0 Taco off the line

    I dunno, they are selling Teslas and Leafs by the dozen where I live, and people seem really happy with them, even for long trips and commutes. I realize it’s not yet a Tacoma, no is the charging happening in 10 minutes, but it’s getting very close. 100% electric cars are selling quicker than people thought they would.

    I notice older people are very afraid of the end of their beloved gas cars and trucks. Myself, working in the electrical industry, and with advanced battery systems all the time, the fear just isn’t there. I’d bet my money on any electric powered device any day over anything powered by internal combustion. Also, realizing how complicated, unreliable, poor performing, and inefficient internal combustion is, electric vehicles will be a huge upgrade in capability and driving experience. They just need time to be fully realized, which is what is starting to happen.

    Toyota Diesel will never come to the U.S. - too much EPA/CARB/SMOG hassle. Toyota has been putting Diesel engines on vehicles in their foreign market for decades.

    I agree wholeheartedly with you. However, I live in an area where it's 70 miles to the next big town and that town is still under 50K people. I live where we get several inches of snow every snowfall for several months a year. I live where power outages are common for two-three days. I drive 250 mile trips at least once a week. I pull a utility trailer quite often. I haul stuff. A lot. The nearest city that has a six figure population is four hour's drive.
    My point is me, and about half the people in the US, do not live near a large coastal city where everything is in one place. We sorta have to take care of ourselves and, as good electric cars are, they are not even close to internal combustion when it comes to range or heavy use like snow driving or pulling a trailer or going up and down mountains constantly.
    If I lived in or near a big city I would definitely get a electric vehicle. Where I and many other people live in rural America? The electric option is not really an option yet.

    I haven't heard any news about the Tacoma, but the 2020 Tundra will have the current 6.7L Cummins diesel in it with an upgraded frame, solid axle front, and 1 ton rear axle. Here is the leaked engine bay photo
